Keeping up with the Markles

Dave in the pub told me the wedding will take place at St George's Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle in May

"and it shall be a bitter sweet event coming so soon after the illness and death of his Gran in February/March from the winter flu virus..."

yeah seems you're right according to the press

The landed gentry should be stripped of all assets and the assets returned to the people of the UK and the other parts of the world they stripped them from, but you lot carry on with your forelock tugging and telling yourself how much money they bring into the country.

Returned to who?

The assets they have if they were taken, be it by conquest or whatever, were taken by relatives long ago, from relatives long since past. Who do you decide gets what?

Does the success of the British empire mean that the average person in the UK should also make payments to other people, as the average person has no doubt benefited from it in some form or another. The UK stood at the top of the world politically and financially, with less fortunate and less developed countries propping it up, the average Joe may not be at the top of the UK but they were still at the top of most the world because of it.

The fact is that they do bring in money. I am not proud of the royal family and do not have a drop of British blood in my veins but even i can see that they are a symbol for many. I find it so odd to see people have such a chip on their shoulder about the royals. The money and assets of the royal family is theirs more so than anyone elses.

If it is the distribution of wealth that angers you, then the royals are just an insignificant spec in the system.

The current royals didn't steal this wealth and this wealth was never owned by you. It all boils down to jealousy.

Not really, the entitlement is unfair, the advantage is unfair, it may not be their fault but that doesnt mean its ok, they have not gained their wealth and privilage by merrit and this is what we are told our society is bassed on.

So by that concept, no one should be able to inherit money as they haven't 'earned' it.

Kings and Queens have earned it through merit by being able to convince people to support their cause and fight for them. Our current Royal Family were given it by the British Government in 1714 so it was our own decision.

You might get to be 100p a year better off, but you can bet that between the royal cup and your lip, any sitting government would disappear it in a trice. The odd billion makes about £15 per person and you cant get a decent night out on that.

So we should all start from a baseline, with no one having an advantage. No inheritance, no large houses while the road over has tiny terrace houses. How would that work?

We are told that our privilege and advantage is gained by merit so we work harder for the benefit of society and ourselves. The fact is that inheritance of wealth happens to make the developed world go round a little more smoothly.

No prince harry did not earn that wealth through his own merits but it will be passed on to him and he has/will lead the lifestyle of limited and expanded freedoms due to it. Is it a good trade? Of course but i don't see why his economic advantage is any different to someone from a very wealthy family or why it is more unfair for him to have this advantage over someone whose great, great granddad built a company to gain their assets.

Hate for the concept of royalty is not enough to decide they shouldn't be allowed to have anything they have inherited.

As said before, they sit on the upper end of the wealth of the UK, you sit on the upper end of the wealth of the world. The baseline is far away and unless you are prepared to apply this logic to all the wealthy, it sounds like you are just picking a bone with royalty.

James Hewitt must be looking forward to some grand kids :D

I'm bored of this story already. It's going to be cringe worthy by the time they get married.

Meghan is so cute. She will be amazing princes I think
How does one be an amazing princess?

Standing on a balcony waving to some celebrity obsessed plebs, occasionally hugging a starving child in Africa to prove she "gets it"?

Or by dropping some royal sprogs?

I'm genuinely curious how she becomes "amazing" in your eyes.

Ultimately they gained their wealth through inheritance from their ancestors who conqured and pillaged, an acceptable practice at the time. Are you suggesting wealth should no longer be inherited and passed to the state instead?

Back on topic the future Princess reminds me of Victoria Beckham...

Are you the Rt Hon. John McDonnel MP?

Considering how rare royalty is around the world, particularly in other democracies, the royals add quite a bit of flavour to the UK, which is great for tourism and cultural influence. I see them as state workers who continously promote the country from birth, whether they like it or not. The palaces in which they live would have to be maintained even if they didn't exist so they're not much of a burden in terms of costs. Also, they, the persons behind the titles, don't actually own anything, titles can be stripped, as history has shown many times.

Sure, they were lucky to be born in that family but so are the children of the extremely rich or the lottery winners so overall I'd say they add significant value to the British 'brand'.
