I'm doing Survival of the Fittest on Saturday, and it's meant to be bloody cold (about 3c).

I've done Tough Mudder and Rat Race in the past, and both times worn a Nike compression shirt. Each time, once it's got wet, it's made me cold, as it's been so tight to my skin.

Am I better off going without a base layer? Or would one specifically designed for the cold help? It would still be close to my skin, so I'm not sure whether it would.

Any thoughts? What do you normally wear for them?

A wetsuit would keep you warmer but with the downside of restricted movement/possibility of chafing. The initial hit of the water will be cold but then it forms a kind of insulated layer between the neoprene and skin which is pretty good at keeping you warm.

It's probably overkill though and maybe slightly defeats the point of one of these events.

Surely a base layer is exactly what you want to be wearing? I did some mud run things at the start of the year (granted not this cold) and it was ideal. Got soaked through, but they dry / warm up quickly rather than keeping you cold. I certainly wouldn't have been wanting to wear anything lose that gets waterlogged and flaps around!

I did the Grim Run in December last year. Most of the puddles we ran through had ice floating in them. I just ran it in a long sleeve running top and shorts.

If you're running then that will keep you warm. Keep moving :)
