Kefir- Make your own probiotics

I bought them from the well known auction site, just do a search there's loads of people selling them. They're very cheap to buy because they just keep on growing!

i dont think i could put my faith in ebay, someone could be selling you any old crappy cottage cheese or gunk from when they have had a fap

LOL! :D

Yes, be careful when buying something like that from an auction site. I'd rather buy from a health store or wholesaler.

Home made kefir was one of the most disgusting things I drank in my life - all those lumps and brrrrrr! makes me shiver thinking about it :)

Not used kefir, but I've used Actimel to make more Actimel. It's only a yoghurt culture after all, just heavily sweetened and flavoured. You just put it in warm milk in a Thermos flask and leave it overnight.

Don't use any with added sweeteners, it defeats the object. The sugars encourage the 'bad' bateria to grow. If you really want to do it properly then buy a probiotic in capsule or powder form. To get a decent, effective amount of bacteria from a yoghurt you will need to consume litres, though there's no reason why you shouldn't enjoy some live unsweetned youhurt, it will add some variety to your diet after all and is a lot cheaper than a product from the likes of Biocare, Solgar or Pharma Nord.

My missus needs to take probiotics after complications from birth - I nearly had a fit when I saw how much these capsules cost, £20 for a tiny jar! It's worth it, don't get me wrong, but good grief someone's making money somewhere!

I had a course of them after my appendix was removed, cost a surprisingly amount on the hospital bill.

This stuff is the cost of milk, it continues to grow and grow, you can give it to everyone you know!

I've been using it for a few weeks now and I agree it can have a sour taste but all I do is blend it with a banana and it makes a really tasty milkshake that doesn't taste sour at all.

Watch these videos if 'free' probiotics and their health benefits interest you (also look to the right for part 2/3 e.t.c)

Well, what I bought keeps multiplying and makes milk sour. I'll have to fap into some milk to see if it has the same effect :D

Have done 2 batches of this now. Got 2 lots of the stuff from ebay (2 teaspoons or so) which Ive used in a half pint of milk over 24 hours each time.

The end product is quite nice, like a thin natural yoghurt, a bit of tang to it.

Just filter the grains/culture out after that time with a plastic sieve and start again after 24 hours.

I cant get hold of raw milk so Ive used whole, organic milk which seems to work OK also.

Over the coming weeks the culture will grow and you can pass it to friends and family.

Recommend giving it a go.
