Gahh I'm annoyed, 5 days after I pick my new car up and doing a bit of last minute xmas shopping some silly women in an Isuzu Trooper with about 224 million kids packed into the back makes a b-line for me in the car park today, thus I have to take evasive action and naturally this means to avoid having my car demolished I clip the kerb with my front left alloy a little around the outer edge and take a chunk out of my tire sidewall. I've taken a picture and left it at full res for detail, so how bad is it? ...and is that tire anything approaching dangerous with that chunk out of it ?

Kerbed Alloy

I have had a tyre like that for nigh on 8k now, so you should be ok.

If you want to get it refurbed then theres two placed to try, one is at the back of the Brum city ground, or theres a place in bilston, they repaired, and by repaired i mean welded up a broken alloy wheel for me, which is still going 35k miles later on the car.I cant remember the name but i can dig it out later.

Thanks for the info, I'm mostly just gutted about the alloy but I was more immediately concerned about the tire, I didn't think it looked deep enough to be anything to worry about but I thought I'd check anyway.

As long as it doesn't show any signs of a bulge, the tyre should be ok.

Don't know if its just the photo, but those discs look to have a bit of a lip on them - might be worth checking the pads with the wheel off.

I think it's just the photo, the car went through a full BMW pre delivery inspection the end of last week so it should be all fine. I've got an inspection service indicated for 5k miles so it should get looked at then anyway.

Those discs look mine have done since I bought the car in Feb - they will be fine.

As for the wheel, that's not too bad a kerbing - won't be expensive to buff out. I kerbed mine quite a few times in the first weeks - luckily the worst affected wheel has since been replaced. It's not something that bothers me anymore, and they're not corroding. I might get them sorted in the Spring.

As for the tyre, it's hard to say - it's more than likely that it'll be fine, but there is the possibility that it could have damaged the structural wires inside. The only way of telling is by getting a tyre monkey to remove the tyre and inspect it. Do note however that a lot of Kwik-Fit type places have a tendency to scratch these MV/MV2 wheels when changing tyres - so might be worth finding a reputable place first!

I just found something interesting, on closer inspection with a torch and a nice clean finger, there is tire black all over the tire damage, I reckon it was there when I had the car, I don't think I did it after all ...I wondered why it was a good bit away from the alloy damage it's self ...which I know I did as I can see it's fresh ...and I heard it :( ...not to mention I inspected the wheels before I took the car away ...I just didn't look that closely at all the tire sidewalls as it was freezing and dark.

thats the one thing about alloys im always worrying as soon as i get out my car i do a quick check sometimes to make sure i havnt curbed them you do have to be really careful :(

All care garages will apply tyre black to the side walls. Makes em look better. Nowt wrong with that. Its what you'll most likely do to them too when you give it a good clean and polish.

Yea, that was my point, I haven't had the car long enough to wash it yet, let alone use any tire black ...and the fact that the damaged area of the tire had tire black over it ...means that the damage was already there, because BMW blacked the tires for me.
