KERS cars have built-in starter motor?

Hmm as I said with what I read I doubt they could get much longer out of what they have anyway. Which makes me wonder how the hell they will get 25 seconds of use pitting. I know it's slower but the car has to be accelerated from 0 as fasts as possible.

Very interesting to see how this works and who gets stuck in the pits :D

I would be very surprised if they couldnt increase the capacity if /when required - there is just no benefit in doing it currently ( for F1 cars at least)

What I guess might be a limitiing factor (and maybe this is what you / the article you are refering to meant - completely guessing mind) is that the "effort" it takes to recharge x % now isnt easy to increase

ie the capacity of any given unit is easier to change (ie potential for unit to get smaller for same amount of capacity) but the amount of charge from breaking x amount for one particular corner will always remain the same in actual terms

Sorry probably explained my thought really badly lol

I think the plan is to use electric motors powered by the KERS charged batteries to pre-spin the Turbos to give anti-lag, so should have near instant throttle response.

There are certainly rules which allow the opposite. The turbine can be used to generate energy for the batteries.

No as it's against the rules iirc.

I don't remember seeing anything that prohibits the cars being started by the driver (I may, of course, be wrong), only that the car must be able to be started by an external device. So it may well be possible, but it would probably be tricky to do and might add extra weight to the KERS.

Ecclestone's perspective is not based on the grounds of safety, it's based on entertainment factor. If a car is running on electric in the pits then the crowd opposite, paying silly prices for tickets, won't get what they came for.

So Bernie says Electric motor down the pitlane will not be happening.

Who actually makes the rules Bernie or the Fia.

The FIA make the rules.

I don't think anyone goes to F1 to listen to F1 cars cruising at 60mph....

Bernies issues are non issues. F1 cars in the pitlane on electric motors will not kill people, and they will also not affect the fans experience. Bernie is using those as fronts to hold up his opinion that he doesn't want to see F1 cars being powered solely on electric, as it could potentially be a worrying road to start going down.

I agree with him on that. I don't want the FIA getting the idea that they could power F1 cars using electric motors for large parts of the race. However, there is no issue with electric only in the pitlane.

But the FIA make the rules, not Bernie.
