Hey guys, after using my £5 keyboard for a while now I have decided that it is time for an upgrade :)

I've been looking around and I've had a few ideas:

logitech g510
razer black widow expert (non backlit version)
Steelseries 6gv2
Razer SCII keyboard
save up a bit/wait for the Corsair vengeance k60

my budget is around £75

would rather have a keyboard with mechanical switches and multi colour led backlighting, but I'm not really sure if I can get that

what do you guys think I should do?

If you want mechanical and backlit then the Razer Blackwidow and the Deck Legend are your only real choices as far as I know. Personally I would say a nice feeling mechanical keyboard if far more important than back-lighting ...however you can of course have both with the Razer.

I don't know weather any of those new Thermaltake mechanical boards are backlit or not, tbh I haven't paid much attention to them so far. Worth checking out anyway.

I am guessing that you probably haven't heard of Deck though, http://www.deckkeyboards.com/ ...well there you go anyway, that's what they are like. However I am not sure where you can buy them in the UK, if indeed you even can. Still, I've shipped keyboards around the world before, it isn't a big deal. From taking a quick look at Deck's website it doesn't look like they do UK layouts.

You might want to check out WASD keyboards, too, I am not sure if they do back-lighting or not, but they might, since they do heavily customised boards.

really? I didn't think that it looked that good

Users who have asked for a spec me a keyboard before, and then came back to report what it's like couldn't be happier with it.

Only two downsides for what you are looking for.

No mechanical switches.
Single Red backlighting.

what's best in your opinion in terms of cherry switches?

Oh my, that's quite a question :)

However I better give you some links so you can do some reading on the subject I guess.

However, before I do, a brief run-down on the most common Cherry switches is as follows.

Blue - tactile and clicky (this means there is a noticeable tactile bump before the key actuates, also they make quite a noticeable clicky noise) - These are considered some of the favourites among those who type a lot.

Brown - Tactile but none clicky (so like the blues but without the clickyness, however I am not certain off the top of my head weather the activation force is the same or not) - Good all-rounder.

Black - Linear switches with fairly high activation force (so these do not have a tactile bump or a click action, they are purely linear in action and in this case they are have a reasonbly high activation force requirement) - Good for fairly high intensity gaming, especially FPS games, although some people prefer a lighter switch for intensive gamin sessions, it's really a case of try them and see what you think.

Red - Linear and very low activation force (These are essentially the same as the blacks except they are much more sensitive, in other words the force required to actuate the keys is much lower, more like a brown switch but without the tactile bump) - A bit of a love it or hate it switch, if you like blacks but find them to heavy then this is your answer.

So which is best, well that's entirely personal preference, however 'most' people tend to recommend linear switches for gaming purposes and tactile for typing ...the click is purely personal preference. Many people consider brown switches to be the best compromise all around for gaming and typing. Personally I use a board with red switches ...which are the least common of the above and in my opinion a bit more of a love hate switch than say a brown or a blue. Many people find reds to be too light and sensitive.

And now those links I promised; http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Cherry+switches+and+boards

This will tell you pretty much all you need to know about Cherry MX keyboard switches, and probably plenty you didn't even think to ask about.

Geekhack is an excellent source of info with regards to all things mechanical keyboard related. There is also a good European based forum, http://deskthority.net/ ...lots of members of geekhack there but it's more European oriented.

Oh one thing I forgot to mention, bear in mind that not every keyboard is available with all the key switches. Typically the gaming oriented boards only have one or two options.

I doubt you would find most of this stuff in the shops anyway, the deskthority forum has a scheme where members pass bags of switches around, setup on a pcb so you can see what the different ones feel like. However, really you just need to read and watch some videos and make a decision on what you think you will like.

Personally, I would say a good first foray into mechanical keyboards would be something with Brown switches.

Well if you buy something in this country, like a Blackwidow or a Filco etc ... you can always send it back if you don't like it and try something else.

What games are you looking to play? SC2 gamers seem to lean towards the Browns, FPS gamers are a mixed bag, although blue switches seem to be the least favourite, MMO games, Blacks i think are the best, which is why a lot of people rate blacks as the best gaming key, it covers most of the bases.
Though a good typing switch swings it more towards browns. Think about what games you play and then consider a switch, have a read here http://www.gamersedge.co.uk/2011/09/mechanical-switch-guide/ to help you.

I'm kinda swaying towards the blackwidow, but I'm really not sure :(

If you can, get the black widow with the browns, it is available through the Razer store, although there is a slight issue with it being a weird 2KRO instead of 6, but it is the cheapest brown switch gaming keyboard out there.

The Corsair K60 isn't a fully mechanical keyboard, it does have some rubber dome switches on it, just something to bear in mind.

There is a lot of choice out there, best thing is to decide which switch you want based on games and how much you type, after that, pick your preferred keyboard layout and design.

hmmm I could get a blackwidow ultimate, g19, g510 (not much of a difference to the g19), blackwidow ultimate bf3 edition, corsair k60, razer marauder or a mionix zibal 60
