From my thread “Gaming Mice Nerds……I need you”.

This time I am looking for a new Keyboard…. My G19 broke and is out of warren.

I do not want to spend £150 again and have too plug my keyboard into the mains…

I hear a lot of talk about Mechanical Keyboards

What is the Pros and Cons?

And why should I go for them instead of a normal keyboard?

Also what Mechanical one should I go for?

Recommend me some keyboards?

I do not need Marco keys but would like Lit up keys (if they exist in the Mechanical world)

Thanks

Dom

This is what i use, this is what i would recommend to anyone. Its expensive but its worth every single penny... i recently had to be away from mine for a few days and omfg... how did i ever type on anything else.

Pros: Its awesome.
Cons: The software provided to map keys is far from amazing.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Qpad MK-85 LED Pro Backlit Mechanical Gaming Keyboard - UK Layout £132.98
Total : £141.68 (includes shipping : £7.25).

Once you use a mechanical keyboard for a short amount of time there is no going back. You are stuck in expensive keyboard land for the rest of your computer days.

When I use a rubber-dome keyboard nowadays it makes me cringe they feel horrid... :(

The only con of mechanical keyboards is that they're slightly louder than membranes I guess? Most people actually like the noise though. Pros are better build quality and much, much nicer typing feel.

You can hear some of the different switches here. A general overview:

Cherry Blue: tactile and click. Tactile means there is a "bump" half way down when the key registers, which feels nice. Also an audible click which you can hear in the video.

Cherry Brown: tactile and no click. Less force needed to press down than the blues. Tactile bump half way down. No click, but still a fair bit louder than membrane keyboards.

Cherry Black: Linear and no click. Linear means no bump, so it feels just like a membrane keyboard. Except the force required to press down the keys is quite a lot. More so than most membrane keyboards you've tried and quite a bit more than the Blue and Brown switches.

Cherry Red: Linear and no click. Same as Black except much ligher. Same amount of force as Brown switches I believe.

My personal recommendation is a Noppoo Choc Mini. It's only £65 because it doesn't have a numpad. If you want a numpad, then go for a Filco. I would absolutely suggest Filco over the Qpad stuff.

OP, you don’t have to, I just got a G19 for £99.99 from pc world and I am really not a Logitech fan, but its good, well so far. I like to monitor the cores working without it being onscreen when testing, also temps etc, so the mini lcd is very handy for that.
I also have a Cyborg V7, another very good gaming KB.

I am of the age that remember throwing away mechanical KB’s, they are good and robust for typing, if I used the KB to the extent some do when gaming, then possibly I would step back in time and buy one. However, I have a Nostromo for my left hand and a gaming mouse in my right, between the two they do more or less everything I need for gaming in real comfort, so the KB is really just for the odd typing I do, which isn’t much. I like piece and quiet, clicking away on a mechanical keyboard doesn’t appeal.
And before you tell me I don’t know what I’m missing, I do, I had a reception and office in the business I had for many years and the day all that incessant loud clicking went was a good day, much prefer the quiet thud of a modern KB..

Are you sure you weren't using buckling spring keyboards like the IBM model M? Because those feel and sound very different to the cherry MX switches.

Grab one of the Qpad or Corsair mechanical keyboards depending on the switch you want.

Don't listen to the people who cry about the noise, they're just picky.

I read all the "mechanical keyboards are noisy" threads before i actually got one myself and i was worried... but i put it now against any rubber keyboard for sound, my QPAD is actually quieter than the 2 older none mechanical i have put next to it to test...

Ok so they are just basicaly £9.99 keyboards but whatever... QPAD is fine for noise. I love it. But pick whats right for you...

I very almost went with a G19 aswell.

DASKeyboard.

Can't get it from OcUK, blue switches I'm pretty sure and feels very nice to type on with a nice noise.

If you need lit up maybe blackwidow ultimate, but if you play games a lot I doubt you'd need to ever look at your keyboard

I'm still amazed when I see people on a site like this say they need backlit keyboard :D

Posting on computer hardware forum...need to look at keyboard to type. Makes no sense to me. :p

Send logitech a note, even though it is out of warranty tell them you would have expected it to last longer than it did.
I did this with a 5 year old joystick worth £30 and they sent me a code for 50% of any item on their online store.

But then he'd have to buy a logitech again :x

Thank you guys for all the Input.

The only reason why I want a backlit keyboard (I do touch type) is when I game at night I want to know where to position my fingers :P I sometimes miss keys and when I can't see....where the WASD is i start too cry :( haha

Maybe I don't need it anymore...but I like the look of it :P.

I don't know what type of switches I like as I don't think I have ever used a Mechanical Keyboard.

I will look into the QPAD M85...... but it is expensive :( just like the G19.....

Don't need the LCD anymore.....

*EDIT*

I like Logitech.... bought the G400 on Saturday :)

Just don't want a cheaply made keyboard again

Mechanical keyboards are expensive, you can't really get a cheap one. The G19 is just ridiculously overpriced for what it is.

I recommend a Filco Majestouch 2 Tenkeyless. I have it and love it, I can see it lasting forever, it's built like a tank. Mine has MX Brown switches, the tenkeyless aspect is surprisingly almost as good as the switches (it means no numpad, smaller keyboard)

Ideally I would want a similar keyboard with MX Red switches.

Personally I would NEVER use a keyboard that is non mechanically or non tenkeyless after my Filco.

P.S. you don't need illuminated keys, unless you're 12 :p Turn the light on at night! (using computers in the dark damages your eyes)

edit : Actually having said you can't really get a cheap mechanical keyboard, that's not strictly true I got a Compaq MX 11800 for £15 on eBay :p you have to get a vintage one for it to be cheap.

The Qpad MK 85 is really nice to use.

The cherry reds are silent unless you bottom them out (I have added the O ring mod though).

The backlighting is really effective when you do need to look at the keys (I'm the same I prefer to game without the 'big light' on).

Rubber dome keys feel dull or dead in comparison.

Get a mech :D

I have cherry reds, and i can tell you i regret not getting browns or blues. I'll probably go blues when i get another. I'm hardcore gamer btw.

100% contact Logitech , they have some of the best customer support around they bent over backwards to help me with a keyboard i had problems with and replaced it when it was out of warranty.

stupid question but how would i tell if i had a mechanical keyboard or something else not sure what the physical difference is  i have a razer arcosa, the keys are loud imo soft and wobble about it does feel pretty cheap so im guessing its not a mech,
