Keychain password manager vs 3rd party

@GaryTheSnail

Im sure you are aware, but in latest BW release Argon2 is now supported.

Best to make sure all app clients and browser extensions are on 2023.2.0 before switching though.

I decided to go premium as well recently, mainly just to support them and also use the implemented 2fa feature for some sites.

I shall check that out in the next hour n get it updated.

You have to change it via the browser account login, its under security-Keys if I remember correctly.

And once changed it logs you out of all your BW apps and extensions.

Also be sure all your bw clients and extensions are on 2023.2.0, this is important. There are few browsers out there still waiting for the update.

It's been over a month with just using Apple Passwords, and TLDR I've switched to Bitwarden for everything.

Apple Passwords is perfectly fine for the average user such as my wife (she prefers it over 1PW). But for someone who uses the extra features of a proper password manager it really starts to frustrate. The lack of ability to edit web addresses, add any meaningful data to saved items, no ability save service accounts/API keys without web addresses, and constantly having to use TouchID finally swayed it for me. As an example, if you go to a site which has a username, you require TouchID/biometrics for Passwords to input the username. If you then press next to get to the password page, it again wants biometrics to input the password. I also don't like how Safari locks the password field and you have to use the menu to unlock it, if for example it doesn't recognise the site, or it's suggesting a new password.

No requirement for the family plan as the wife is using Apple Passwords, so I feel $10 or whatever it is to have 2FA/MFA is entirely worth it.

Ive been using BW for about a year, coming from 1Password. For my needs it's fine, and for free it's brilliant, but I pay the $10 for the extra stuff like 2FA. UI is basic looking but it does the job, like most password managers there is still things that don't always go as you want like prompts to store a password, though it's improved a lot since I got BW.
I thought 1p was brilliant when I had it but I didn't feel like I was making use of it's full potential for me to pay such a yearly premium price, think it was about £40 a year.

From what I understand, BW does not support Passkeys on iPhone yet, which is frustrating.

Wish I knew that before paying for premium.

What is their definition of 'future release'? My 1Password account is still active and I tried that on a site I have a passkey set up with and it worked perfectly with 1Password.

Think they are lagging behind on that from what I read, actually thats something I quite miss from 1p, the handy notification letting you know if a website you have credentials held for has passkey or 2fa support.

Going to have to read up on passkeys, still have no idea how it all works!

BW have offered me a refund which I'll likely take. Has to be within 30 days I think of taking it out. I'll likely return to them in the future when they have proper mobile support for Passkeys.

Good to know, I paid into my wallet just a week ago, so might try to get that refunded then. Going to give 1p ago again and see what this passkey stuff is about.

I've paid £20 for Dashlane with their Black Friday discount and imported everything to it, working perfectly so far.

How you finding it?

Im given 1p another go, I just think the integration with MAC is so good, and 1p support is top notch, my only complaint is the price, I guess $35 isn't silly amounts though, its just that some are a lot cheaper or free.

Anyone using passkeys with a password manger where available?

Im going to try out an account with one soon, just trying to get my head around things though, does it replace my email/password login entirely?

What if I moved to a different password manager how would one move the passkey to the new password manager?

I don't have a clue about passkeys. For some weird reason my Apple ID now uses one but I can't for the life of me remember how. I use Bitwarden with a Yubikey so I can wait for a little while to figure it all out.

If anyone has any help let me know!

Yeah it's all confusing, from reading a passkey is very secure, so would like to use them where available, just need to understand them a bit more when it comes to any worse case scenario for example having a backup, and how you can move around to a different password manager with them like with passwords currently you just export and move into new PW manager. My fear as technology evolves is getting locked out of things with all the increasing security measures.

1 week in with 1password, and I just find it much better than Bitwarden. I think the integration on MAC is a lot better, the fact the browser extension is not separate from the main desktop app is a big plus, that was something that was quite rubbish with Bitwarden, having to unlock them separately if the need.

I think BW is good, but it looks so basic when comparing with 1p and BW is not as user friendly, there are advanced settings in BW for example that can be changed for the better but in reality this should be default and not needed for the end user to have to think about. Can't remember exactly what it was but it was something to do with a better encryption Argon2id setting, then you had all this nonsense about what's the best iteration number to have with this, I mean really, not user friendly at all.

I think in the long term BW need to up their game a fair bit, Out dated UI, not as user friendly, lagging behind in key areas such as passkey support. Sure its a very popular PW manager currently but for the most part thats because its free or very cheap for the premium features. I can see them falling behind soon if they are not careful.
