In my old Astra keyfob there was little chip that stored the code. It had a habit of falling out when open. Lose it and I would have needed to reprogramme it, costing a few hundred quid
Same with my Skoda keys, take the key fob apart and change the CR2025 battery just like a normal key. They do seem to chew through batteries much quicker than non-keyless ones.

There is a chip that will hold the program for like a minute before it is lost
as long as you remove the battery and put another one in straight away, you will be fine
My Megane gave a warning that the keyless entry key fob battery was low a few weeks ago and like you i thought "hmm will this be expensive/take to the dealer job ".
Looked in the manual, and it simply said put a new battery in it. It even said they last ~2 years and the car was 2 years 2 months old so pretty much bang on.
It took a pretty standard cheap watch battery which you can get in a pack of 6 for like £1.50
