My next car has keyless entry, no choice in the matter really as it comes with an option pack. Question is, would it be better to keep the spare in a farady pouch or just take the battery out?
Well if they want a car they'll take it, but the question is what's the best way to store the spare key, which quite possibly won't be getting used.
Faraday pouch should be fineMy next car has keyless entry, no choice in the matter really as it comes with an option pack. Question is, would it be better to keep the spare in a farady pouch or just take the battery out?
Indeed, you’re simply preventing the rest of the world from “hearing” the signals from your key fob.I keep mine in a little aluminium (I think it is lol) biscuit tin, works the same I think...
Just doing my bit for societyIndeed, you’re simply preventing the rest of the world from “hearing” the signals from your key fob.
Because we keep the keys seperate, one is stored away upstairs in a drawer and the other one constantly used. I don't remember ever actiually having to use the spare with any car.If the spare key is left at the house while the car is away, why would it need to be stored "safely".
When the car is home store it in the same way as the main key.
As I understand it, faraday cages do not block outbound signals, only inbound, unless they're grounded.Indeed, you’re simply preventing the rest of the world from “hearing” the signals from your key fob.

I'll just get a cheap faraday pouch for it.
Strictly speaking I don't think they are faraday pouches, rather just RFID blocking pouches. The term Faraday has just been borrowed as a generic term for something that blocks signals. As I understand it, faraday cages do not block outbound signals, only inbound, unless they're grounded.
Presumably when it's at home then the main key is also in a Faraday pouch, the whole point being to block any signals when the car is parked in a known location to prevent signal repeating attacks. If it's a spare key and it's home when the car isn't why does it need to be kept in a faraday pouch?
Can the code from the key be copied and stored, ready to be used when the car is back?

They work both ways equally well. Grounding is an additional precaution to protect equipment and personnel from EMPs or lightning strikes. As I understand it, faraday cages do not block outbound signals, only inbound, unless they're grounded.
Faraday pouch, but check if the key stops emitting signal after a few mins. I know my BMW key stops after it's been left still for a couple of mins.
