Hi all,

My friends in a bit of a dilemma, his 13 year old daughter uses his computer a lot and he thinks something odd is going on.

Always chatting to others, emails, the usual stuff but he has heard a male name mentioned a few times and has asked his daughter about it. She says its just a lad off the internet, but he is worried. Any emails sent or received are being deleted, msn has had its chat log turned off several times and there are a few passworded files on there that he cant get access too.

He is just a little worried about whether this lad is who he says he is, and in todays world i really cant blame him.

He is after a keylogger that he can install, and run it in the background while she is using the PC. He hates the idea of doing it but needs to do it to keep his mind in one piece. Dont suggest the police as he has no proof of anything.

Ive only over used BackOrifice before and its a pain to setup for admining a PC, he isnt very computer literate so a simple program would be best.

I don't know about a keylogger but if I could suggest that the daughter has access to the PC only if the MSN log is on, there are no passworded files and emails are not deleted. I think that is fair and I too would be worried if it were one of my children

if useing msn msg there OP to save convo to txt doc.

But if my dughter/son and i had them types of worry's that there talking to some other pearson apart from friends I would block the MSN or what ever program there useing in the router

Seems a bit extreme just because his daughter wants a bit of privacy. I mean come on "a males name was mentioned", half the population is male not really anything to be suspisous of is it?. I wouldn't want other people viewing my chat logs no matter what I was talking about so it's hardly a suprise she's turned it off and deleted her emails. And I don't think a passworded ms word file likely containing something along the lines of "I love xxxxx" is anything unusual either.

Anyway I think a screen capture program would be easier to use. As all you have to do is view the screenshots. And remember using keyloggers to gain unathorised access to peoples email accounts is illegal wether it's your pc or not.

Sorry but if he is worried he should be talking to her first and laying down the law before going down the route of keyloggers... which can potentially lead to very serious conflict. It IS spying on someone, and even if its' for their own good they might not see it that way if you catch my drift.

Talk first, set her up as a very restricted user if need be. As a last resort, well-known keyloggers are Spector Pro, Actualspy etc but he may need to pay for them. Personally for me it would only be an absolute last resort after all else had failed, and it doesn't seem to me that your friend is anywhere near that stage yet.

If she finds out, and she will if he underestimates the knowledge of teenagers, or he confronts her after he's found out whatever information - he can expect to lose her trust for an extremely long time.

Sure she gets over it in time

As parent should you be worried about safety.

Last thing I would wont is it turning into the sky news’s story or Sarah pain horror.
But we all have different views on this

MSN plus, hide the chatlogs in some random folder, password the chat logs and password the preferences of MSN plus?

God I'm so glad my parents actually trusted me when I was a kid on the net. It's quite disgusting to see the lengths some people go to invade their kids lives.

theres a diffrence between trust and safty if got to the point were the ppl there talking to a danger the parent must ack

But some thing know one understands till there older

Still think a good talking to best place to start...But if theres a danger there talking to some one in some other city that they dont even no who they are and there trying to meet them..then comes down to safty
