Kia Soul??

Turbo bro?
You know all about turbos, stop winding us up :)

My 2000 Peugeot makes that, without a vnt and without mega mega fuel rail pressure.

If thats common on diesels then its news to me, I dont pay much attention to diesels

The last diesel i owned was in about 2004-2005 when 130bhp from a 1.9 pdtdi was "quite a thing" :D

Bit like a Hyundai then :p haha?

Actually no trollol....

The steering is OK on our Hyundai given its electric. The brakes have excellent power and feel and don't suffer from being massively over servo'd. Gearbox is fine, a little notchy but it will wear in a little more.

Well I've drawn up a sort of suggested short list for tyre kicking over the next couple of weekends. Basically on price and auto-box availability.

VW Polo, Match 5dr – 1.4(85PS)
DSG (7 Speed)
£15,240

Skoda Fabia, Elegance 1.2 TSI (105PS)
DSG (7 Speed)
£14,655

Ford Fiesta , Zetec 5dr – 1.6(105PS) (Duratec)
Power-Shift. (6 speed)
£15,345

Soul '2' 1.6 CRDi 126bhp
6-speed auto
£15,105

Toyota Yaris TR 5Dr - 1.33 (99bhp)
Multi-drive S (CVT)
£14,570

Peugeot 208 No Auto!!

Renauly Clio. Cheapest Auto £17,395 Wtf it’s French!!!

Vauxhall Corsa Rubbish Autos.

Any more suggestions welcome. Also any input from owners for or against..;):)

If it was my money I think I'd be pulled to the Skoda/Polo. Skoda has good engine in the 1.2Tsi and it's matched to the DSG box, but I think it's built on the old platform. Polo has older 1.4 unit, but latest platform. But as the car will probably be a long term keeper 7 year warranty on the Kia means it's still worth a look.

get the soul and slam it to the ground on air rides xD

can lower/raise the car to allow easier access/loading/mounting :p

but yea go kia with their 7 year warranty... think when we got the rio we only had maybe 3-5 years on it? but it's a 56 plate 1.5crdi, 55k on the clock and only money spent on it is the usual mot/service and wear parts, brakes/tyres :D can't fault it for reliability. neighbour just got a 13 plate cee'd (i think) and it's styling inside and out is rather nice :D

but mmmmm that soul is a box on wheels, a shiny box... but a box nonetheless xD

It doesn't bother me at all, I think they look quite quirky, in a Postman Pat van kinda way..:) I can understand why they're not everyone cup of tea but being a BOX they make good use of the space, plenty of headroom, raised seating position. I might have found my new first pick though.. Yeti, in 1.2Tsi DSG guise isn't as expensive as I thought. I'd not looked at it because I thought it was way more expensive. £16,890 is not a million miles away on price, may be worth a look and some haggling on price.

I've been driving a Kia Ceed 1.6 2013 auto diesel for two weeks now. Sadly the car doesn't really do it for me. This hire car only has 11k miles on it and things are vibrating in the dash and the door panels pop now and then and the interior plastics etc don't look the best quality. OK you do get a 7 year warranty but I just don't like it.

Also I thought that the engine would return decent mpg. In my Audi 1.8t (190) I achieve just over 40mpg on my way into work and 36mpg on the way home. In the Kia even using cruise control, pressing the ECO button (though I have no idea what this is meant to do?) the best I managed was 43mpg into work and 38mpg home. This is all on 40mph and 30mph roads however they are pretty clear as I start at 7am and by the time I finish work, go to the gym I'm driving home at about 7.30pm. Maybe it'd be better on a long run on the m-way? I don't know but I do know that I don't enjoy driving autos, they just don't respond fast enough to small adjustments on the throttle.

You can't realistically compare a slushbox auto and a manual for economy. I am greatly surprised by your 1.8t consumption if that's over the same roads though - my old car would have got nowhere near that in what is effectively town driving.

Surprised its rattling toovactually I've been greatly impressed by the new ceed hire cars I've had

It's one from Hertz. My company hired it for me as I broke my left foot and they wanted me in work so that was the deal. I am surprised it has these annoying noises too, but then I don't know who has been in it before me. A lot can happen in 11k miles. The vibrating noise in the dash is the most annoying.

These are exactly the same roads and I'm pretty good at driving smooth to obtain best mpg when I want to. I am only using both cars digital readings though, not the mileage and brim tank method. Even though my route is on 30s and 40s there is only one junction that has traffic lights, one T junction and 4 roundabouts on my 7 mile drive into work. On the way home I go a slightly different way which throws in 1 more set of lights.

I know the slushbox wont help out with mpg at all. As said I have tried all combos of cruise control, eco button pressed, changing gear when I choose etc. I would assume that cruise control should be the best option but I've been left a bit disappointed. I was hoping I'd be seeing mpg of 50+. As I said though maybe on a long run on the M-way these kind of figures appear and my Audi wont do that, it tends to be between the 32-35 mark depending on what the roads are like when I come off of the m-way.

Forgot to add to the post above I do sit at about 80 on the clock on the m-way so maybe the mpg would be better in the Audi if I sat at 70.

Last day with the Kia today so I did another little experiment. After pulling out of the big T junction on the way into work, which is about 0.6miles from my house, I reset the average mpg readout. Once I got into work it was saying 48.9mpg! I guess the whole start up and warmup cycle eats a fair bit of diesel, which over a long journey wouldn't show so much but with only a 7 mile journey to work it has quite an impact.

No, I apprecaite that. Just goes to show though that if you only have about 10 miles to commute diesels don't really seem to be worth it, at least not in this case, it may not be the same in all instances.

I don't really enjoy putting the car through driving such short journeys all the time and will be glad when my foot is healed enough so I can get back to cycling into work.
