Kick in the teeth for Sky and the Premier League

Interesting.

But surely this will just mean they won't sell it in the EU or bump up the price for them to do so and recoup any lost income? It's also a very small amount of their total income :o

The costs for a dedicated football fan in Britain(be it for TV,tickets or something else) can be a proper example of what people tend to refer to "rip-off Britain". Our clubs wont like the decision because it could mean less TV right money for them in future and I understand them but,at the same time, I find it annoying how they see getting loaded with money as competitive advantage over their top 5 peers in Europe. Even championship clubs end up making more money than most top leagues on the continent and not all of it can be traced to bigger popularity but rather to milking fans on average more.

Indeed that is a problem Lord_Kohain.

They claim it will keep people away from the grounds? The sheer cost of going to see matches is crazy.
Guys on 5Live were talking about it the other day how it use to be a family thing take all ya kids and that but now its just so damn expensive it's more of a problem than anything else.

Although i have Sky Sports, its very rarely i watch the PL at home (More La Liga tbh), most the time I'm either at the game or at the pub, the latter of which doesn't cost a penny except drinks.

By the sound of it Novasports would need to show the raw feed by itself to prevent a breach of copyright, without the onscreen graphics etc.

You do realise that Sky or Murdoch dont own ANY satellites, they just rent transponders from Astra.
Worst thing with Sky is you have to take loads of basic channels you never watch at premium rate before you can even subscribe to the sports channels. I'd had Sky since it's inception, 20 years, everything cost £12.95 pcm back then. Now for basic package/sports/movies/hd/multiroom you aren't going to get much change from a hundred quid a month.
I already voted with my feet.

Not really. Apparently deals have to be pan-European now, and not per-country, so Sky will soon own the rights to all those Greek channels you can currently watch ok, and we'll be back to square one.

Yes, I don't know why people are getting excited, Sky sell the rebroadcasting rights to certain people for X amount because only they can see it. If more people here start watching via them, they'll simply start asking for a heck of a lot more from the other people you can get it from over a satelite, so the prices for those services go up dramatically.

End of the day Sky own the rights to broadcast the prem league and can sell it on to whoever they choose for however much they want.

One of the issues would be, if the EU decides you can get TV from another EU provider, then Sky will stop selling the rights to broadcast the 3pm games, which will long term make it much harder to get streams of those games.

That will stop 3pm game being played legally in pubs from other european providers, will you still be able to stream the 3pm games from other parts of the world, can only hope.

This stupid woman, from what I can tell, is saving herself a bunch of cash, but will now find the service she uses instead goes up in price, and all the other people paying £200-400 a year for a card to watch various European footy channels will likely see their prices go up extortionately, so well done her, she's screwed over all of us, wooo.

I don't believe Sky sell the rights to other EU countries DM, the Premier League sell the overseas rights themselves.

What happens now will all depend on the willingess of people to subscibe to other EU providers. From a domestic point of view, when you factor in the cost of the equipment needed to pick up Nova etc, it's probably going to end up costing you more than subscribing to Sky. It's only the pubs that will benefit because of the crazy rates they're charged by Sky however I suspect the Premier League will do something to make sure Nova et al charge pubs similar fees to Sky.

A lot of the talk is that the Premier League already feel that the overseas rights are undervalued so unless Sky would be willing to pay even crazier money than they already do, I can't see the rights to the EU being sold to 1 provider. Because of the cost and hassle of subscribing to a foreign provider, I can't see this having a huge effect on Sky; it will only effect their pub market (which I assume is a small % of their business). All that will happen imo is that Sky will just factor in whatever they think they'll lose into their bid when the rights need renewing.

Guardian said:
The ECJ also opened the door for the dismantling of the FAPL's country-specific sports rights regime, stating that such a system of selling matches to broadcasters is "irreconcilable" with the aim of EU law to create one internal market.

"Payment by the television stations of a premium in order to ensure themselves absolute territorial exclusivity goes beyond what is necessary to ensure the right holders appropriate remuneration," the ECJ said in its ruling. "Such a practice may result in artificial price differences between the partitioned national markets. Such partitioning and such an artificial price difference are irreconcilable with the fundamental aim of the treaty, which is completion of the internal market."

The ruling could force the FAPL to look to sell its broadcast rights as a pan-European TV deal, most probably to Sky, although it could look to limit sales to some European markets.

Now it might be that this simply leads to an individual being free to view whichever European satellite company they want, for their football fix, but it also makes it perfectly possible for Sky to buy exclusive EU rights for their games. Given that they've always been happily willing to do so for the UK, I'd say it's not outside the realms of possibility that they may do so for the whole EU, especially if it becomes enough of a threat.

Oh, and who thinks the landlady in question won't have to pay £9k to Sky any more? Because she will.

Baz is correct the PL sell the rights abroad, Sky have no say outside the UK as that's the only area they purchased distribution rights to.
Surely some competition can only be good for us as consumers cant it? Or is it preferable to bend over and take it from Sky every time they increase prices as there's no other choice?
Foreign channels bid for rights just like Sky do, but only what the local market can afford though. Hard to see where Greece are going to be able to pay more.
Then there's the far east and the Arabic states, a market that the PL and clubs are desperate to break into. There's always streams from these areas and the Chinese dont seem too bothered about any copyright nonsense ;)
Personally I see this ruling today as a good thing .
