Kicked to death for being a linesman

Well in N.I it is grammar school=rugby and no football

Secondary schools = football

If it's the same in England it's hardly a surprise the difference in crowds, and as for most countries with big football problems they don't have much of a rugby scene compared to the likes of the UK do they?

football fans V rugby fans? are you serious? mixed stadiums, beers, banter....its a joy to be in a rugby stadium, now football....completely segregated, violence, racism...granted this isnt a constant but these traits are almost never seen at rugby stadiums.

chalk and cheese when it comes to the typical persona of a football player and rugby player. I've played rugby al my life and have never come across thugs and blatant racism that I have at low level football (i've never been to see a premier league game so cant comment). so going on my own experience, I can categorically say that this type of behaviour (linesman being kicked to death) would never happen on a rugby pitch.

I do like football so this is why I care enough to comment, its just a shame its let down by a few Neanderthals.

Segregating fans ENCOURAGES violence and tribalism in football, if you separated Rugby fans people would quickly descend into terrible behaviour.

People are generally speaking not very good people when in large groups. When you are surrounded by a large number of opposition fans, and they are as well, there is no "you vs me", take that dynamic out and fans would be a lot less bad.

Fact is, since basically people existed, people aren't particularly lovely, they almost all hold poor opinions of certain groups, some of those make sense(northerners for instance) some don't, hating jews or black people. People feel safer expressing their opinion in groups, its always been that way, even if its a good opinion... ie single people rarely protest bad things governments or companies do, people are far more likely to join a protest if the protest is already large.

People cheat, people say stupid things, people get emotional at decisions on and off the pitch. These are all completely normal human traits, otherwise we wouldn't have emotions and would never try and cheat, I've yet to meet a human that hasn't broken a rule in a game, or had emotions, which suggests that everyone is fairly similar here.

3 teenagers beating up a linesman and killing him is no less disturbing than 3 teenagers beating up someone on the street and killing them.... it has NOTHING to do with football, and everything to do with the fact that these 3 kids were overly violent idiots.

Either way, if football stadiums had been mixed for the past 30 years, there would be a lot less bad blood between fans, and a lot better behaved fans.

Point proven, thanks.

Any thoughts on why domestic abuse calls to South Wales Police spike by up to 80% on Six Nations match days?

Surely not those rugby fans who are full of banter and joy?

Football fans are clearly breaking into their, beating the wives before running off down the street to best up the nearest gay/black man. Come on!

Football has OTT bad coverage, rugby gets OTT good coverage. Neither is reported on sensibly or in an unbiased manner.

That article does explain that alcohol is the cause of the increase in domestic violence, Rugby fans are still generally much better behaved during the game.

The OP's article wasn't down to fans though, it was aggrieved players who attacked and killed the linesman. :o

Terrible news! RIP.

I hope the young men responsible are made to feel the full force of the law.

Peoples reaction to this is utterly hilarious though.

I know, its great, just read a letter sent in to footie 365 which basically said something to the tune of, "its a sad state of affairs where a linesman can't do his job for fear of being beaten to death".

Firstly... what, secondly, yeah a linesman shouldn't have to fear for his life, however average joe public walking down the street gets beaten to death.. thats ok though, people shouldn't have to fear for their lives ANYWHERE at ANY TIME, they do though because nasty people are around. Thirdly, there are linesman who make decisions that costs millions of pounds on the result potentially, a disallowed goal in a world cup final, about the biggest decision you can make. Can anyone remember one of the 100k fans in some of these biggest game situations where a linesman has been beaten to death?

There are people who get shot/beaten to death, at work, at home, on the streets, when they play poker, football, basketball, tiddlywinks, some people are horrible violent ***** full stop, this is NOT a football story at all, and it has no bearing on football, it doesn't tell us anything about the state of football.

Football needs to set the tone from the top down, it's time to insist that top level players respect the officials and treat them in an appropriate manner. Ten yards for back chat needs to be enforced, yellow cards for swearing at the referee needs to be enforced and the ref's mic's should be broadcast live and recorded.
