Kidney Stones

Going through kidney stones pain at the moment. Went to hospital twice yesterday! Finally give good painkillers. Got to see doc Monday to arrange scan of kidneys.

Pain is the worst I have ever had in my entire life! What utter agony!

Had gallstones and a choleocystectomy by age 26. Admittedly, having suffered what I can only describe as having a razor blade dragged through my guts on a string, kidney stones sound worse.

Godspeed kidney stone sufferers, godspeed. And no offence, but may I never join your ranks.

I managed to collect 7 of the little ******* over a 10 year period but luckily I have been clear for 10 years. I've been lucky with some of the specialists that treated me over that period that they have used every which way to remove them.

lithotripsy
Open surgery
Grappling them out with a grabby thingy - thank god for anaesthetic
Passed naturally - felt like a brick

Best option is to make sure you don't dehydrate and if you do have one don't over drink as you can end up in more trouble plus if you feel the stone starting to move neck down a few painkillers before the pain gets to bad or they don't work.

Kidney stones have been a constant strain on my life for around 15 years now and 10 years ago I was diagnosed with Medullary Sponge Kidney.

In all I've passed around 40 stones 'naturally' and had 19 removed from my urethra 2 years ago when I had a stent put into the opening of the bladder.

Most of those I've passed have done so with a nothing more than a little discomfort but I've had 3 of them literally floor me with pain. I have a supply of morphine locked away in the cupboard for when such events occur but thankfully it's not been needed in a while.

The last scan I had showed over 50 in my left kidney and a kidney function test shows its only working at 15% efficiency.

There is a good chance I'll have to have my left kidney removed at some point in the future but for now as it's working and as I luckily haven't had too much trouble with infection it's staying where it is.

Blimey, sorry to hear that.

I am still going to see doc tomorrow as hospital advised i have a scan. Pain has gone today!!

The last one was blasted with ultrasound, which is quite bearable compared to the pain of the stone.

Exactly, that's the best, quickest and least painful way to get them removed. I don't understand why NHS doesn't do that as a matter of priority for all kidney stone sufferers but rather loads them with drugs and let them go through the repeat agony of flushing it out themselves. It's ridiculous where they try to save money from..

Because my pain has stopped does that mean they may have passed through me?

From my experience and what I've been told you usually go through the pain as it passes down the tube from your Kidney to your bladder (Yeah sorry but I must have been asleep in biology) It could just mean that it's now sitting in your bladder, though I would get a pinching sensation every now and then when this happened to me, depending on the size you may go through more pain when passing it.... Although that's not to say it may have broken up in your bladder...

What causes them? Is diet a factor?

Again I'm no expert but from what I've been told or read Diet is a factor however you need to be prone to them... As there are several different types of Kidney stones though diet wise its hard to say what to cut out unless you know what your prone too...... All the men on my dads side of the family, including me, are prone to Kidney Stones. My Dad seemed to get the stones based on Protein, whereas I get Calcium stones.... however I'm well overdue another stone but I drink a lot of green tea, cranberry tablets and I love lemon juice with fish which I try to eat a lot of, all of which are shown the deposits down in your kidneys :)

Hope this helps

Never suffered them but a female friend has, who is also a mother.

She said given a choice she'd suffer childbirth over kidney stones anyday of the week.

Hope I never get them!

In my case the tubules of my Kidney are facing upwards rather than downwards as they normally should. They also have cyst like formations on the end which results in a sponge like appearance.

The result is urine collects in them (a bit like water in collects in some plants), crystallizes and forms a stone.

I have to drink shed loads of water everyday, to the point where I'm absolutely sick of drinking water. :(

Dude...... I feel like I'm drowning when I try to drink 2 litres of the stuff a day, you should try some of the herbal remedies, which really seem to do the trick. Maybe ease off on the water drinking and see if it helps as it should

Yeah been there done that. The herbal remedies are ok but the last time I reduced my water intake I got a bloody infection, so I've not really got the balls to try it again.

And 2 litres is that amount I have to drink a day as well. I never stop wanting to pee and I can't remember the last night I slept with having to get up at least twice, all this and I'm only 36!

Had gallstones and my gallbladder taken out. For some reason I just know I'm going to get kidney stones one day :(
