I've visited Chernobyl myself twice now. Fantastic both times. Climbed most of the way up Duga 3 and also up onto the roof of Reactor 5.

If you want detailed info let me know. I currently do some work for a company that runs tours into the exclusion zone (we put together the Top gear special). Not sure if that violates forum rules! Mods let me know if this counts as advertising or anything.

Read all your blogs a while back. North korea one was very very good!

Chernobyl is somewhere I really want to visit. The history of the place and the abandoned buildings, tragic and incredible. I didn't realise until BattFinks post that guided tours were available, I was always lead to believe that it was a sort of enter at your own risk type place.

With the guided tours in mind, are there any restrictions on the time you can spend in the area?

A rough Google search suggests it's around 150Km from Kiev, so probably a couple of hours either way.

There is a small hotel located within the zone. I've stayed in it and it's a little bit rough but not too bad. Last I heard you could stay for 4 days before needing to spend a night outside the zone. I know of someone going in for an 8 day trip and staying in the zone for 3 nights returning to Kiev for one night then back to the hotel in the zone for another 3.

Yeah it is around a 2 hour drive to the zone plus about 15 mins spent checking documents at the checkpoint.

Thanks, I'm really interested in booking up now! Perhaps you could arrange some sort of OcUK exclusive guided tour for a laugh (I wonder if some members could be banned from the hotel for swearing, etc!).

Thanks for the replys everyone I 100% want to go, even if don't make this time will go back I have added Chernobyl to my bucket list of places to visit.

Going back at the end of March, will be my 4th time in the zone. There's a couple of members from the forum that have been

Last October we had a guided tour of Reactor 2 & 3 days to wander around Pripyat, there's a lot to see if you're interested in Urban Decay etc.. If you get a chance Duga-3/Chernobyl 2 is worth looking at

As someone's mentioned you get the same kind of exposure that you will get on a long haul flight. When you leave the exclusion zone you have to go through dosimeter control

I think you can book daytrips that pick you up from Kyiv Train station (no experience of that though as we stayed in a town called Slavutych & caught the train in each morning).. It's about a three hour drive from Kiev to the exclusion zone, so I would expect a really early start

A couple of snaps from some of the trips (I am not a photographer):

Mafia pizza! Its near the stadium in the centre.

Yup, been twice with a couple of others from here. Amazing trips, no sleep for a week, walked 12 miles per day, on at most 5 hours sleep a night, and to be honest, ridiculous amounts of vodka but what a blast the last trip was!

Pizza always sounds good :)

YES... THIS !!! Pizza served by the metre, cost about £6/each

Sold!

I went to Kiev in August. The War Museum was really interesting.

Also, try and go to Mezhyhirya Residence if you get the opportunity. The story behind it is amazing, and the grounds are absolutely enormous and beautiful. You can rent bikes just outside to take round. Definitely worth a cheap bus/taxi ride there!

You likely to make a re-appearance on a future trip?

Dunno, would love to, but very unlikely the next couple of years! Zero disposable income! Hope when i do go back most of the group are still regulars. I look on in insane jealousy when the pics start coming!
