Well as you can see from my thread tittle I killed my CPU trying to get it past 3.0Ghz. :(

It was Venice 3000+ with the LBBLE stepping and had managed to get it to 2.7Ghz Prime stable for 24hrs and was FEAR / BF2 stable @ 2.9Ghz but not Prime stable.

Tried to push it to 3 Ghz, got it there booted to windows and started BF2, ran for about 3 mins then my PC just turned off. ****

Many a foul word was said, then I drowned my sorrows in several pints of lager.

SO!

I need a replacent, I've got a buget of around £150- £200 ish, looking on ebay theres a few decent chips around but not sure what to get?

Dual Core? 146? 144? FX 60?

I wanna hit 3Ghz ish with my next chip.

All thoughts appriciated.

Cheers

dependent on cooling tbh, with phase you're looking @ around 3.5ghz, with good air maybe 3.1, I'd go for an opteron 165/170 personally to save some cash. you could pick up a phase unit + opty for the price of the fx60.

Sorry, excuse my n00bness what is a phase unit?

Cheers

hmm, its kinda like a wee freezer for your cpu, quite pricey but very effective cooling. Shame a lot of the 90nm cpus suffer from the cold bug.

Whats the difference between the 146, 145 (144 you mean?) and 170

The 144 has a 9x multi, the 146 a 10x multi and run at 1.8 and 2ghz respectively.
The 170 is a dual core runs at 2ghz per core with 10x multi.

Just on a side note, are you certain that it's dead? Have you tested it in another system, cleared cmos etc?

I was thinking that. My old 4000+ done that when I tried for 3ghz it just switched off. Clearing Cmos brought it back to life though.

If it is dead then a good choice at the moment is the Opteron 165 / X2 3800.

They are both dual core chips but the Opteron is known to overclock very well (motherboard dependant).

I have also suggested the X2 3800+ as it is quite a bit cheaper than the 165 and it is also a decent overclocker. Mine is running at 2.4ghz on stock volts 100% stable. (Zalman 9500 cooler)

Well considering an FX60 is nearly four times over budget then you can safely rule that out.

On air the only chip out of the ones you mention will do 3ghz.
Is the 146 but this all depends on what stepping you get.

CABYE 0540's are the ones usually on lowish vcore.

The opteron 165 and 170 are dual core and like above depends on the stepping how well they will overclock.

The opty 170 is £320 ish and the 165 £250 ish but would need to be under water at least for a chance of 3 ghz 24/7

deffinately try clearing the cmos and testing it in another board - its very difficult to kill a cpu with just turning up the htt/fsb - as long as you has sensible volts accross it then i cant see it being dead
