Kim Dotcom is warning users off of Mega: 'Air is getting thin'

I heard he fell over the other month. I remember becuse the following day scientists came out and said they had detected gravitational waves for the first time.................

Do miss the internet good ol'days when it was only nerds online.

I've built up quite the case of generally aimed misanthropy because of it. It used to be a place where you could exchange ideas, data...Now these days, every idiot and their dog spends their cash on a rig, floods the net with dodgy porn and has ruined file sharing for everyone.

And to boot, frankly I feel exploited most of the time.

Ah poor little Schmitz. Can't help feel he will die of a heart attack before he see's the inside of a jail.

Must admit not a fan as when you see him talking he just comes across as a complete *******.

Justice Gilbert ruled that the case could only be livestreamed and any footage would be removed as soon as the hearing was over.

I can see that this will go exactly as planned

Doesn't seem right as Mega is just providing a file sharing service. He should not be responsible for what is uploaded.

Mega also take down links similar to Youtube. So why does Youtube get a free pass?

This is a very valid point. One piece of attack is he is targeted and responsible for what users share. The argument is (and it is valid based on the Kim prosecution) if a criminal had something illegal on iCloud then Apple would be prosecuted.

I don't mind the guy at all and he is another example of laws being broken to prove a political point.

I hear you!

Since being on the Internet since '95 (BBS before that), it has changed....some for the better, some for the worse

Back in those days, everyone you spoke to had some degree of intelligence

I remember dialing BBS that were based in people's houses :D

Has anyone been watching the case unfold? I've watched about 6hrs from all proceedings so far.

Very hard going. I'm no legal expert but its pretty clear when a US lawyer effectively says "there is no law but you've got to do it anyway" it really makes me question any chance of a fair hearing for this man.

From what I've seen I don't see how the US can argue anything on the grounds of criminality based on a civil case

Perhaps someone more in depth can clarify this for the record: Mega effectively grew a storage network comprised of millions of files uploaded by users. Mega used terms and conditions to protect themselves but are still facing infringement.

Am I correct in drawing the same parallel that any form of cloud based storage or server farm operated by any ISP that transmits or stores copyright material should face the exact same charges?

With services like this I'd say that reliability of the service is the most important thing to consider. Will it still be around in a year? Some new file hosting sites make lots of claims but don't have a long reputation to back it up, they might just close down overnight. Services like Dropbox are well established and you can be reasonably sure they will still be around for many years. I use them to back up important files account statements and the like, but I encrypt those files on my machine first, and only ever upload the encrypted files to Dropbox which means they'll still be safe even if someone could access my Dropbox account.

if that is the case then they're not breaking any rules

IIRC one of the issues that megaupload had before them was that when people uploaded duplicate versions of the same file then they'd essentially just create a new link to the file... then when they got a take down request they'd simply remove the link but not the file (if there were other links pointing at it)

Having checking in on Kim fairly regularly I am glad he has got this. Apparently the US tried to block it?

Wish him all the best and i will be watching the streams if available at times I'm awake and not busy.

He does know how the internet works right? :D

Someone at work used it to try and send a load of site picutures. Funnily enough when the manager attempted to download them, the AV etc. went completely nuts.

Got the user to use a more appropriate method to do it. Added it to the blocked sites (not sure why it wasn't already).
