kind of an odd 'spec' thread - AMD quad, but with ddr2?

k, situation. i have an old intel E6600 in a 'bad axe' d975xbx mobo with 6GB ram

prob is, the sata ports are failing and now only a few work.

i was going to buy a new mobo but one with 8 sata ports is quite expensive

so, i was wondering - is there an inexpensive AMD solution? a basic amd mobo, with 8 sata ports and a quad cpu?

ddr3 is still relatively expensive and a ddr2 mobo would allow me to use my current ram.

Gigabyte MA770-ES3 AMD 770 (Socket AM3/AM2+) DDR2 Motherboard [GA-MA770-ES3] for £52 but only has 6 sata ports and only 2 dimm slots.
sorry if this didnt help in anyway

hmm, i just looked a little further down the page and for 30 more than the quad i was looking at, i can get a 6core? AM3 which i presume means i'd have to go DDR3 as well?

may have to rethink this.

£150 for the 6core,
50ish for 4GB ram for now?
and the mobo.

i haven't looked up the AMD side for a while and havent researched proper since e66/Q66 were the things to get.

If you wait for the motherboard to re-stock witch it probably will you can use your old ram.

i get you man.
well the ocz deal only lasts till the 1st of september and i read somewhere in the forums that some people are having troubles with the ocz "gold" rams, dont know why as i havent tried them before. i havent even built my first pc :D but saving up to replace the guts of a 5 year old packard bell :p

heres the link that someone gave me for the OCZ gold problems

1600mhz? ta mate, i was looking at lower end stuff tbh.

this is getting worse for me now. i was umming and ahhing then saw usb3 support. carp, now i want that.

oh well, guess this is what a bonus is for really ain't it!? :D

side note,i take it the 800 chipset is a better choice?

yeah i know what you mean.
you see something cheap then you see another item for a few more £ and then it just keeps going up :D

im not really sure if the 800 chips are better than the 700,try asking someone with more experience than me but i think half maybe most of the 800 chipsets have better on board graphics than the 700 and the 800 chipsets use sb850 but again im no expert in these things.

for £15 more you get the crosshair 3 formula.:D but it only has 5 internal sata and 1 external at the back. wow from ddr2 to a crosshair lol
its up to you man

First of all you need a AM2+ mobo to use DDR2. Most will be mATX and gigabyte mobos have a nasty habit of putting the sata ports inline with the gfx card. If you have a long card it will block them.

I recently built a htpc by reusing spare DDR2 i had lying around. I used the asus m4a785m-pro with a phenom II X2 555 (which unlocked to an X4). It will take X4 AM3 cpus too not sure about hex cores.

only 6 ports on that one i think

ordered the new thingy now. will prolly put the 6GB ddr2 on the market next week

got the 6core amd, asrock 890fx, 2TB hd, and some ocz ram

wasnt quite clear. mentioned 6 sata ports, then said 2 supported something extra. could be 6+2, or 2 of those 6 supported whatever it was.

either way, 8 ports coming my way :)
