Kind of "noob" crossfire question

Hey,

So my question is if you guys could help is how exactly does crossfire work because I currently have a single 6950 and next month will be getting another one to run side by side, How ever I am only familiar with SLI and have not got much experience with AMD cards.

At the moment I am just thinking I should be able to buy another 6950 whack them together and it be smooth running from then on but no doubt it is not that easy right?, A little help please if you could .

Also I suppose as an off topic question I am a little curious as to where all of the cards are going at the moment every time I have a look through the options of cards available the list gets smaller and smaller by the week it seems, is there a new series due to release soon or something?

If you mean how to install a crossfire setup then it's just similar as SLI. You install the second card, preferably leaving enough space between cards for good airflow, and install the crossfire bridge. In catalyst control panel, enable crossfireX (it should be enabled automatically, unlike SLI which needs to be enabled manually). Run some benchmarks and verify the improvements When you meet problems in games, remember to download n install the latest Catalyst Application Profiles (CAP) from AMD's official site.

No idea about where the cards have gone. nvidia just said they're not going to sell Kepler this year, however AMD might be selling some 28nm pipe cleaners this year. Who knows.

also download the CAP for crossfire profiles to help with performance. just install after you enable crossfire in the catalyst control panel

Read the thread above to get UPLS disabled so windows doesn't randomly turn the 2nd card off to save power.

update your ATI profiles as mentioned. And if you get a nice performance set up done. Don't update your drivers as it's more than likely going to cause problems unless you need to or it's a major update.

I whack in both cards, CCC detects both, Crossfire is enabled = Win.

config change to unlock the CCC limits on overclocks and disabling UPLS so both fans are controlled with MSI burner and so the 2nd card isn't switched off randomly?

It isn't as simple as it could be imo. However I do find the performance worth configuring for Never going back to a single card.

I was just looking around my computer because of having to get stuff ready to change the case it is sitting in and it just came to me that my PSU only has two 6 pin power connectors and i guess to have dual 6950's i would need 4 of them in total, is 750w psu even enough to support crossfired 6950's?
