Is the Kindle Fire HD a tablet worth getting for the price it's at?

I still want to stay away from the Nexus 7 due to all of the faults that it had, however I also see the new Microsoft tab and the iPad mini could be out soon.

Does anyone know the release dates and prices for the Microsoft tab and the iPad mini?

Cheers

The nexus 7 didn't have that many faults, just a very vocal minority. Iknow of 5 people who bought on release date, all of them still have their tablet and none of them have reported any issues at all and love their devices.
I was tempted, but will go for a Win8 tablet, as for release dates, check the tech blogs as it is all they have been talking about for the last week

You're right, I obviously imagined all the faults I had with the two I had and the half dozen I have seen on display...

I have yet to see one without faults, just because some people either don't notice or don't care doesn't mean that they are not there.

I wouldn't say 'some' - I would say most. I had slight screen raise which I didn't notice until I read the threads here. I quickly pulled off the back (took about 5 seconds), removed the sponge tape and it was gone and it's now perfect.

I'm waiting a few weeks until the 32gb Nexus 7 comes out, there's speculationthat the 8gb will be phased out and the 16gb will be priced as the 8gb.

The Microsoft Surface is not really in the same market as the Fire HD, Nexus 7 and iPad Mini.

If the rumoured iPad Mini prices are correct, it could be £100 more than the comparable 7 or HD. I'd say your choice is between the Kindle and the Nexus.

How locked down is the Kindle? Its not stock Android is it?

Guys remember this is Tom we're talking about, he uses a micrometer to look for imperfections.

I honestly can't see why anyone would buy a Kindle over a "proper" android tablet, I don't think it has any advantages but a truckload of disadvantages.

The Kindle Fire HD is not really aimed at the majority of users who frequent this forum, I would suggest, but is targeted more at you average 'man in the street' who would probably give you a blank look if you mentioned Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich in the same breath, let alone Jelly Bean!

He does use Amazon a lot though! :)

Having said that I have actually ordered one, which I hope to receive on 'launch day', so will be interested to see what is is really like. I will probably upgrade it in a year or so anyway, but at the moment I couldn't really see the need for a 7" version of my Galaxy Nexus!

Better Screen, far superior sound, cheaper, significantly superior support and the as yet unknown possibility of none of the plethora of issues that the Nexus 7 has, but we'll have to wait and see on that last one :p

The Fire HD seems to have superior hardware all round, it's mostly going to be q question of OS. Amazon's version of Android has its advantages but also drawbacks, I'm sure there will be custom ROMs but the Nexus will get any new iterations of stock Android for a while.

Who mentioned anything about the N7 ?
Besides, how do you know if it has a better screen, its not out yet - likewise better support, really ? I doubt it. Better sound? the N7 is fine through headphones - anyone who tries to use a mobile device through its own speakers is just stupid.

The Fire is locked to amazon content only and their own bespoke O/S. It can't access the play store, it can't get android updates and you can only get content (i.e. books / music) from amazon. Even if you hack it to get to the play store there is no guarantee apps will work because amazon changed so much.

I reckon you'd be better off with one of those cheapo android tablets than a Fire. At least you will be able to make a decision of where you get your content and use common apps that you use on other devices / computers.

The OP and pretty much every other post after, you're right though, you didn't specifically mention it but it seemed to be the ongoing comparison for the thread, my apologies.

All the previews have mentioned the better screen. Better support, you have read the reports of google's support right, and now go google amazon's support for their kindle range, far far better. Ahhh, those idiots, why did they even bother putting speakers in there

Yes, it is an Amazon device after all, what was your point?

And if you have already made the choice to get content from Amazon?
