's' is actually the "standard" letter for distance (where you're not wanting to imply distance in the horizontal direction).

("standard" in quotes because it's not set in stone. That is, it's a lot less standard than t for time or v for velocity).

Silly me, at least I can claim that I haven't done physics since GCSEs :)

I believe that 's' is technically known as "displacement". Distance is an absolute value but displacement can be negative or positive depending on direction. 'x' is the more widely used notation though.
