Personally I loved it, and will be buying the Druids DLC when it's finally released on Steam.
Just forget Total War because it's not. It's more about the RPG side of developing your Knights/Heros and unleashing their special skills in battle. If you are obsessed with historical accuracy it's not the game for you.
The battles can actually get very tactical and do require a fair bit of skill and forethought.
The only downside to it (for me) is that it's not really sandboxy:
In the Vanilla game you only play as King Arthur, and the variation comes in whether you invest your skill in Christian/Pagan and Authorirtarian/Liberal directions (different paths unlock different skills and units).
With the Saxons DLC you can also plays as, yes, the Saxons. Again though you always start from the same position.
I would have liked a bit more variation, as with only two starting positions it can lack a little replayability. Having said that I have clocked up 170 hours on it according to Steam. Not bad for a tenner.
The Druids DLC will add Wales as a third playable faction. And Dragons.
