Kit Lens & Macro Tubes - Photos inside

I made do with what I had, using some cheap macro tubes from ebay, and my 18-55 IS. I tried with the 50mm 1.8 but couldn't get the right focus with it.

C&C Appreciated :)

How were you focusing on the water? Manual or Auto. Thought manually focusing before hand to get the sweet spot would be fairly straightforward?

Perhaps try to angle the camera above the water slightly to get more of a circle where the water drops in rather than quite straight on as you have it now.

As mentioned 1 is the pick of the bunch.

Focusing was manual. With the 50 I just couldnt get anything in focus, the dov was so accurate and I'm guessing the fstop defaults to 1.8 with the macro rings on.

I've packed everything away now, but I'll try at more angles soon :)

Did you know there is the aperture trick? Basically you set you lens such as the 50mm to say f/11, press the DoF button and immediately (whilst holding the button) twist the lens off by pressing the release button. It works great when I paired a +1 and + 2 tube with the nifty fifty.

The first shot stood out, the forth shot too, the rest didn't work for me as they're either out of frame or just too OoF and lack of interesting shapes.

Ooh I'll give it a go :)

Thanks

Was going to suggest the same myself! It's surprisingly easy to do once you get the hang of it (only takes a couple of attempts!). I find that tubes are easier to use on a prime because there are less variables to play with.

They are great benjo! I was having a quick go at this the other day, but was struggling to get the liquid level view like you have got. What did you use, a vessel brimmed to the top so that the lens could see flat with it?

Yep! I just had a pint glass that was brimmed, and another glass that i took drops of water out of using a spoon. Set my gorilla pod up so it was exactly level :)

I've just looked at the price of cheap tubes on ebay. They're a lot cheaper then I was expecting (since a Kenko set are well over a ton and OEM are even more). I know I'll have to shoot wide open and with MF, I'm guessing I'll lose some viewfinder brightness. Will my Nikon D60 still meter?

EDIT: And anything else to watch out for.

Right, just got my cheap tubes. On Nikon the lens defaults to fully stopped down instead of wide open.

I might have to have a bit more of a play but focusing the when you can't see through the viewfinder is interesting. On the plus side, I am at somewhere between F22 and F29 so I should have a bit more DOF then the OP.

Looking forward to some pictures Leblanc.

I had another try with my 50mm using the DoF trick. It's quite hard still, and difficult to see what i'm shooting due to the lack of viewfinder light. I'll have to keep practicing :)
