some good photos the action has been captured quite well no. 2 i think would have been better if the rider was in the center of the shot and its a pitty the sky wasnt nicer for you i think they would look cracking with a nice bright clear blue sky

Really? Most of the images were cropped for the rule of thirds. Here is a resized version of the original:

Where would have you made the crop?

As for the sky it was much more blue but a mist came in as I was shooting. Although I thought it was better that what appeared in the photos. I could have a play with the RAW to see what I could do.
Cheers

Some nice captures there. They're all a bit soft though, the focus seems a bit off on some too. Sharpening them up a bit should improve them and maybe adding a touch more contrast.

this is my favourite one. I'd agree with Scuzi; the focus seems a tad off on a few of them - as a matter of personal preference, I'd shut the aperture a bit and get a slightly better DoF on some. Some really nice captures though...I like shooting people with kites!

from where I'm sitting, the crop on the one you changed was good the first time as well.

Looks like you could do with practicing your focussing on moving objects as most of the shots are out of focus. I see you kept the shutter speed up in the majority (1/500s) so it's not camera shake or blurryness from their motion which I first thought it might be.
I think you could have done with shooting a little bit wider as we can't actually see anybodies kits in the shots, just the harnesses.
Did you use thd dodge tool on a couple of the shots to try to make the riders pop from the image a little? Because I can see some haloing around them that you might want to try to sort out.

Good attempt at a hard sport to photograph, take a look on google for "kite boarding" and see some of the pros work, then go back and have another go - keep us updated.

Cheers for the feedback. I agree about the focus but in my defence this was the first time I've ever done anything with fast moving objects as I mostly prefer to shoot landscapes. Man it was a steep learning curve! Even when they are jumping they still move pretty fast.

I was not sure what shutter speed I should use so I tried to get a semi fast one in the stills and I think I had a Fstop of about 8 for most of them, which I thought would give me enough DOF but obviously not. What settings would you recommend? It was a very nice day (even though it does not look like it in the photos) but most of the shots had to be into the sun due to the way the wind was and the way beach ran causing most of my shots to have very little detail in the bodies of the riders.

As for post processing I used tone mapping (in photomatrix) to recover some lost detail in one or two.

I dont know when I'll next have a chance to go down again but hopefully it'll be soon.
