Knee support.

First game of the Vet season and apparently my body has decided for the fire time to crumble. God only know what I did but it felt like I nearly dislocated my knee, maybe an LCL injury.

I'm looking for advice on some sort of support so it doesn't happen again once it's healed.
There's plenty (obviously) around that I can Google but I have no idea really what to look for.

Probably need support with side to side movement rather than up and down. Strength in the join in turning is the key..

Are expensive ones just a waste of time? They range from £10 to 100s.

As above, generally supports aren't ideal as they limit some movement/range and then generally cause a reduction of strength of the joint and then exacerbat the issue. The best option would be to strengthen the joint and muscles around it so your knee/leg is capable of doing what you need it too.

I'd caveat that a support might be suitable in the short term until you build up the required strength, but i wouldn't want it to be a long term thing.

I don't plan wearing it forever, just during football, I doubt at my age my knee will ever get back to 100% so I'd assumed rightly or wrongly that having support would fill the gap once I can get back to a close as normal as possible.

Care to explain how Pyshio replaces extra support? Are both not possible necessary?
A physio will advise on whether you need a support and also provide rehab exercises/stretches, and also provide some form of diagnosis as to what you've done. Could a support make it worse, for example?

I don't think it's worth risking knees, especially if you're not a youngster.

I also play vets footy. Since a couple of season ago I had issues with my right knee. I've been to 3 physio's, had MRI's, X-Rays and shock therapy and none of it has really worked. Apparently I have micro tears in the ligaments. I've since ran a half marathon, park run most weeks, and usually play one 11-a-side game or 5-a-side game a week. I can do this by it managing it properly, doing strengthening exercises at the gym and not overdoing it. It's not cured but it doesn't really effect me during exercise now and it's not too bad afterwards. I would 100% recommend you talk to a physio first, especially as you are old enough to play vets football. Just a drop in session where they can have a look and provide some exercises would be invaluable.

As to the knee supports, I've used a number in the past, usually the more elaborate ones are very uncomfortable and rub or dig in and the cheaper ones are more like socks which just end up rolling up or down and need constant readjustment. I'd be surprised if the best one for me is the best one for you. The one I'm using currently is a knee compression support sleeve made by Bearhug. Does it stop my knee getting worse when I exercise? I'm not sure but it's pretty comfortable and doesn't slip down much.

Most of the supports are useless imo, you need to fix the cause and not disguise it. Spend time on knee focused exercises, i.e strenthing around it rather than a support which is really just elastic fabric and won't be anywhere near as strong as muscle.

I will be doing some exercise to help once the sharp pain feelings subside. I suspect I didn't fully tear the LCLs because I have a decent range of motion after a week, however I think I'll be out of football for another 2 weeks minimum..
I've bought a support with small metal hinges as a test to help when I go back to training. I won't rely on it, but if it's comfortable it's better to have it than not..
It needs hinges to stop it twisting, as like has been said, compression ones are not strong enough.
Hopefully after some time I will not need it.

If I see no improvement inside of a few weeks I will consult a physio.

Yep check with Physio or GP. I recently slipped off a ladder missing last 2-3 rungs and landed fully loaded on my right knee which also twisted slightly. I was greated by a lovely loud pop. Thought I'd torn my meniscus (cause Google never lies lol). Anyway, booked in with the GP as about 2-3 weeks in it was still giving me jip. But ice and elevation really did help. Anyway, I too asked about a knee support and he basically said there wasn't much evidence to suggest getting one would help (wasting what can be a lot of money) and that I should wait 3 more weeks and if no better to see a physio. Just saying a knee brace might not be the right way to go, unless informed to get one. :)
