i noticed on my way to work yesterday, when i turn right quite tight - say out of a junction, i hear a knocking noise coming from the right front wheel / suspension on my mk3 '03 mondeo, any ideas?

Sounds like a CV joint on its way out.

edit: bit of a crap reply lol, if you look under the car, theres a driveshaft coming from the engine to hub, the cv joint is just behind the hub, it'll have a rubber boot over it. First check the boots not split and let the grease escape everywhere, if it has try packing it up with grease and get a new boot put on, chances are if its knocking it'll need replacing in the very near future.

it doesn't happen when i try to turn left though, would that still suggest a cv joint?

Yeah, it would suggest that only one of the CV joints has gone - the one on the left that takes the load when you're turning right.

is it a single knock , or a group of knocks ? ive had one on my steering from new, usually as i pull out of my drive, like a dull clunk seem to feel it up the steering. and also when almost onto full lock.

mines got 18000 miles on it and you dont want to know what has been changed under warranty and still cant find it.(54 plate tdci ghia)

seems to be quite a few on MEG with similar problems.

it's not been happening today really, it was only bad for a day, then very slight yesterday and i had to accelerate quick for it to happen, today i've not even tried tbh, i'll get it checked out at the garage under warranty :)

Hmm..

I had a (W) 2000 Mondeo, did the very same thing, one day it would knock, next day it would be fine.

When it was checked by Ford, it was a CV joint gone. Common fault for that year model, wasn't a costly repair, cost me less then £100 if I recall... Was a few years back now, so can't remember fully. Cracking car otherwise, only problem I ever had with it.....

Driveshafts are like that. If the bearing breaks up, it can get stuck out of place, making the most horrendous rotating clunking or squealing, and then just innocently slip back into it's original spot, and all the noise will be gone until it gets dislodged again by forceful driving (i.e. quick acceleration, or dumping the clutch).

I'd just get it down the local garage tomorrow, as you say - it'll take them all of 2 minutes to diagnose the problem, and save you days or hours of trying to narrow the probabilities down on here.
