EA to Play in Knights of the Old Republic

N. Evan Van Zelfden in Los Angeles warns, watch out World of Warcraft. In an interview at E3 this week, Electronic Arts chief executive John Riccitiello said that EA is working on the next version of Star Wars game Knights of the Old Republic, and it will most certainly have a massively multiplayer online component to it.

"We've got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development," said Riccitiello. The first title, based on the Warhammer property, will launch soon. "And the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about -- in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry at the point when we get closer to telling you about it."

Does Riccitiello mean the oft rumored Knights of the Old Republic Online? "Yes," he said.

Moving into MMOs is an essential component for any gaming company, and it's a big part of the reason Vivendi merged with Activision, for that company's World of Warcraft MMO.

Riccitiello told Portfolio.com that he was interested in owning World of Warcraft, and that he did discuss it, but it wasn't in the cards. "Because [Vivendi] couldn't afford control of EA, and I wasn't giving it up."

But EA is firmly on that path now, with a KOTOR MMO, which would sidestep the consoles owned by Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. "Increasingly, people are going to be talking about direct-to-customer in our business," said Riccitiello. "I think we'll be talking about it louder than most."

Today, two-thirds of the game industry is console systems and dedicated handhelds. "We expect in 2011 for it to be fifty-percent," Riccitiello said.

MMOs will also be useful as a way to expand into foreign territories.

"China's a growth market for us," he said. "We're launching some mid-session games on a micro-transaction model." In May of last year, the company announced an equity investment in a leading Chinese online game operator, The9, Ltd. "And there's a bunch more coming that we haven't announced. "

The company has stated that M&A is part of the strategy, and EA is looking for core game companies "only when they bring great [intellectual property] and great teams," he said. The company is also interested in businesses that "help us build our platform in the area of Asia, online, and direct-to-consumer."

"One is strategic and new, one is core and profitable -- and we're looking at both," explained Riccitiello.

Future games aside, Riccitiello is most proud of EA's revenues, its console-business growth, and what's currently on display to the army of reviewers and game journalists in Los Angeles this week.

"We added almost a billion dollars to the revenue last year," he notes. "This year, we've told the street that we're going to add a billion to a billion-three."

And console games are a market that's doing well. "It's grown 30 percent year-to-date," says Riccitiello. "All three of the consoles are way up. The PC business in terms of it's aggregate of subscriptions/micro-transactions is also way up. "

But at the end of the day, it's about the games themselves.

"I think, hands down, there's not a publisher or a platform that's got what we've got," he says. In his own life, he sees how EA's games are making an impact: "I've got twenty-two nephews and nieces. A couple years there, I couldn't buy everything I wanted for them at the holidays. I can do the entire holiday -- and capture my mother for the first time -- at the EA store. That's never been the case before."

I was excited about another Star Wars mmo but reading things like the mmo side will be 'a component' of the game makes me pessimistic. Do a great singleplayer/standard multiplayer game or do an mmo.

Mixing it up doesn't work for me, probably just because games that have tried similar things haven't really amazed me and made me think 'this is the best way to make this game' like Guildwars, Hellgate or even AoC (sort of single player at the start). All enjoyable if shortlived experiences in my opinion.

I'd just rather have one thing or another. Hopefully I'm reading too much into it.

I agree if ithe MMO part is only going to be a component part then i think it will fail and if EA are part of it not sure what the support will be like either.

They sound like they're too busy trying to figure out how to make the most money from it to actually make sure it's any good :/

EA's arrogance is simply astounding. I can't believe that they're so full of themselves. Right now, with the exception of Warhammer Online, which isn't even their game, they are struggling for original games and concepts. The reason he can do the entire holiday buying for his family, is because he has endless amounts of crappy ports and sequels to choose from. Way to go!

I don't hold out much hope for this, I was hoping for a kind of SWG2, but that's clearly not going to happen, especially if as has been said, the MMO side is a component and not the full thing. Boredom tbh.

I was really hoping for a proper KotOR 3 to finish it off. Same reasons as Dreaded Cheese. Except I don't hate MMOs, you just can't get a decent storyline with one.

well i'm hoping they simply make a far reaching universe like in the previous games, but make the worlds much more expansive and open, but have a single player game with a fantastic story spanning most of the starting worlds like the previous Kotor games, so in essence its just a KOTOR game with a much more open world to explore and do things in but with that same attention to story as the normal games. Then have an online version, maybe set the story as essentially the sequel to the single player game and just use the same massive universe as the single player game, two birds one stone type of thing.

MMORPG's just do not do story the same way normal old school RPG's do story. Lotro gets closest with an actual main story line aswell as all the sub story that makes most mmo's but even then theres so much "padding" to the main story, and if you don't want you don't need to do the main story at all aswell as there being a lack of real cutscenes and so on. WOW just doesn't have a main story at all, most mmo's lack a hugely story driven experience and thats something that I would sorely miss from a KOTOR sequel as the first two are unbelievable good games.

But like i said, theres no reason they can't do both in the same world. I mean if you took lotro, had the different area's as different planet locations with different parts to the story, then use the same area's for the mmo as is. You could easily make a single player game with a storyline set in the past/present or future to Lotro in the same world with mostly the same enemies everywhere scaled differently or having your fellowship as the other parties in your group with no problem. Hell if you looked at lotro, you could make the actual story of Frodo and the film stories as a single player game separate, in the same world, while the MMO is as is with a story of supporting and helping them in their goal.

If that was the case then they could certainly make a decent single and multiplayer version of the same world.

True, But the whole point of an MMO is to make you'r own story. SWG was just that, You had a story to tell rather than just they tell you the story and you follow it.

I liked that about SWG, Until they messed it up.

I agree with Mart entirely, either make it an MMO , or dont.....this MMO just being a component of it seriously impacts my excitement for the game. Others have tried similar things and it always fails for me.

You want to make a foray into the MMO market, you want a slice of that exceptionally profitable pie, then make it a full blown MMO. Dont go doing it half-baked.

Oh FFS we dont want no stinking mmo for kotor we want kotor 3 like kotor 1 and 2 were. DAMN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree 1 and 2 was amazing having kids running around screaming "i willz pwn u !!!" will really ruin the game

I hope the mmo component is optional ie you dont have to go online if you dont want to
