Krell Announces Reference Blu-ray Player

Whats the difference between a bluray player that costs £150 and one that costs £15,000? Isnt a dvd player used to play dvds and thats it. Apart from cosmetics, nice remote etc what else does it have to offer?

Just buy a normal blu-ray player, gold plate it and stick a few diamonds to it

Ok this prompts me to ask something I've not been to sure about..... When you read about some BD player, they will go on about it's various processing and picture enhancement qualities etc... But does this apply if you send the picture out through it's HDMI socket, does the player do anything to the data first, or is HDMI just digital link and the player is no more than a transport ?........ Which would mean would have to use Component to see the effect of it's on board processing.....

If it does do something over HDMI then a better player should give a better picture ????

The data still has to be processed before being sent out to your TV yes - unless you are sending it to a receiver that can decode BD (don't know if one exists), normally though the BD player would decode the video and then you could get it to send that along with the raw audio out to your receiver to decode (the audio that is) and send out to your TV / speakers.

This one must just be very very good at taking whats on the disk and giving you what the director saw when mastering the film at the studios I guess ... along with being gold plated or some rubbish :p

The player decodes the video, the video is sent digitally but it's 'raw' and decoded. With audio usually the tracks are decoded by your receiver.

In reality though with 1080p24 video just about every player produces the same PQ. With interlaced sources, DVD etc the video processing can make a difference.

I'm only concern with picture quality at present, as my Linn processor amp does all the audio, So if I was to go buy myself a nice high spec Denon, sorry no Krell for me ..LOL... to replace my basic Sharp BD-HP20S I probably wouldn't see all this "extra" processing making much difference.... Screen is Panny 50S11.....
I think a home demo would be mandatory.

Interesting how Krell think they can justify such a high price....

I'm not experienced in Bluray, but there's massive difference to be seen and heard between so called rubbish and decent DVD players. I went from a Panasonic DVD recorder which was meant to have excellent picture and sound to a £60 used Denon DVD 1920, and the Denon is immensely superior in every way.

There's an awful lot more to it than you seem to appear to think. I was sceptical aswell, but the difference for me was night and day. I'm not suggesting that this new Krell Bluray is the way forward for everybody, but as it utilises technology that is proven to give amazing results, it's only a matter of time that this technology becomes cheaper and filters down into more affordable hardware. Maybe a rather long time, but a matter of time all the same. :p

No, I'm not saying that in 5 years time you'll be able to pick up a 300 quid Bluray player that's as good as this, but you you get the idea.

I remember seeing Cyrus DVD players for about £1200 which offered progressive scan about 9 years ago. They were the dog's parts. Now I have a Denon player that is almost certainly as good, if not better, for a fraction of the cost.

well to date BDP players haven't shown much difference if any in blu ray playback - and that is from owners of the expensive models like the pio lx91 and denon AU1D or even the Oppo.

There are difference between BDP players but it is analog connections, CD playback, SACD/DVDA capable or DVD upscaling but not BD playback

The only point in getting any high-end BD player would be for the analogue audio really. And since anyone who can afford one already has a processor it's pointless. The video processing is needless too as again if you can afford this then you'll have either a video processor or a display with good VP.

Some people like spending a lot of money on things.

Yes, and I would have to say I am in that group if you looked at my set-up:eek:.... But I like to see some improvement or gain for my investment, hence the questions about how the picture may improve or not.
One day I will borrow a high spec player and do a comparison at home.

I have read about people commenting on differences between various BD players, but I have to say that I'm skeptical. That's partly because I tested a Panny BD player against a PS3. Out of the box, they did look different, but that's because it turned out that the Panny was slightly brighter. Change the settings on my monitor (i.e. up the brightness on the PS3) and I couldn't see any significant difference. Makes me wonder how many people who're saying "look at the difference" have checked their calibration.

Looks chunky.

Maybe a £1,000 HDMI cable compared to a £10 also makes blurays look better, ye right!
Bet no one would notice the difference between this and my £220 second hand PS3!

What we need is a double blind test ;).......... errrrr hang on that isn't going to work is it :D .... ROFL
Seriously, just need to borrow a high player and expensive HDMI lead and plug it in and compare with a cheap player or PS3.... Once I've finished sorting the the audio side, I plan to investigate a better BD player.

....and a Ferrari, and a yacht, and a Rolex, and world cruise...or a Naim CD player that cost about the same..... but then world is full of unnecessary pleasures... ;)
