Take it to Renault and never go to Thick fit or Halfrauds for air-con products again.

The Halfords bottles are fine, I did mine myself was much cooler after, only cost me just under £40.
Well worth it, maybee the OP never let it build the pressure up first.
Who knows, but I never had a problem, I did 2 cars with the bottle and both where low aswell.

I have never used kwik fit for anything, but to get my air con re-gassed i used RVS, there are a few of them around, they were very helpful and also did a great job.
