Kwik Fit having a laugh?

My favorite bit with Kwik Fit is when they tell people they "cant allow you to drive the car in that condition" when you refuse to have the work they advise you needs doing.

I'm sorry? YOU wont give me the keys to my car back unless I pay you a £300 for discs and pads my car doesnt need as they were only replaced 2000 miles ago?

I think its more a threat to call the rozzers if you leave than a threat not to give you the keys back (if they were telling the truth about the brakes and not making it up it would be a criminal offence to drive the car on the road).

Tbh I think they could just be trying it on, the exhaust is absolutely fine and showing no signs of wear, it's just the mountings that have rusted through and given way (It is an 8 year old car).

They offered to fix your car in a manor they are capable of, you'll need to take it to a repair shop if you want to re-use your old exhaust. ;)

Any half decent garage / indy exhaust/tyre centre will sort it out.

I had a new hanger welded on my old e38 - it was about £40 iirc.

When my father owned my e39 528i he was "advised" it needed a new back box by Krap fit, this was in 2007 iirc

He ignored them & the car still has the exhaust it was built with.

As far as i know BMW's come with Stainless Steel exhausts from factory which usually last the life of the car not like other car's where exhausts fall to bits in a few years.... I might be wrong though...

kind of linked to a annoying grey area, we as a garage cant keep peoples property from them so if they insist on having the car back we cant stop them, if something happens though the court will rule against us as 'the experts' saying we shouldn't have handed the keys back if we considered the car to be in a dangerous condition. It doesn't matter what forms are filled out stating we have informed the customer we can still be considered liable. Although with any of the 'fit' places it is a utter con and anyone who goes to them deserves all the suffering they will get.

Surely the fact that you have no legal right to retain the keys is a valid defence for this?

The actual hangers are often formed from hollow tubing, not always. but very often. And the exhaust wouldn't need to be removed to weld a new hanger on...what is it they say about fools and money...
 :D

Maybe that's true for relatively new cars, but I can't recall any car I have ever owned having exhaust hangers formed from hollow tube. They have always been solid bar.

Depending on where the hanger mounts they may well have to drop the exhaust a fair bit to get enough access, and as Lopez has said if the hanger has rotted to that point, chances are the box is pretty ropey as well. Expecting something like this to be done for a tenner is incredibly optimistic, I can imagine KF charging a tenner to replace a rubber mounting.

Hmm, I've not read that before, it would explain the long life of this system though - I was under the impression it had a stainless system as an aftermarket when I bought the car, but subsequently found out this is on my Dads current Merc, not the BMW....

I'm sure Fox will come along & put us right, but I'm fairly sure BMW oem exhausts are not stainless.

Also if the hanger's failed all the load of that end bit of pipe will be hanging off the rest of the exhaust, probably breaking the horrible rusty welds where it goes into the next silencer in the system. So that's probably why they want to replace the next section back.

It depends on who runs the branch you go to. My local tyre and exhaust centre is now a kwikfit, with the same guys working there. Good bunch of guys. Theyre doing my rear tyres for me, 265/35/19 CS3's (BMW spec) for £221 each, balanced and fitted. I cant find them anywhere else that cheap. A lot of them will try it on though and recommend it as their advice to replace unnecessary parts.

That is cheap. Where's that branch? Have replical CSL's on my 330D in a 275 rear (from memory) and couldn't find much for under £260 each.

They suck they quoted me £240 for new front brake discs and pads on a fiesta so I had it done for £100 locally and intend never to call them again

They quoted a friend of my mums £600 to change the discs, rear shocks and a single rear spring a her Tigra (after they failed it's MOT on those items).

I gave the car a once over and all the bits that 'failed' were fine. The discs had a very small lip on them, the shocks had the minutest bit of oil residue on them and the paint had flaked off a spring. Told her to take to else where and save £570 but she insisted the parts be changed.

Done it myself for half the price in 90 minutes and made £120 from it. I would imagine with a lift and air tools they'd be able to do it in half the time and get the parts for less. No idea how they can justify charging so much!

Complete rip off merchants.
