Well that's the assumption we've made from him having funny looks when he's driving about by himself with L-plates on. People are probably staring because they're wondering the exact same thing you just said. They would be puzzled to see it.
Another touched nerve, is there something in the air today or something?
Or maybe it's because typically people displaying L plates are learners, and the majority of learners hesitate at junctions, drive at or below the speed limit all the time.
Due to this, many people probably don't want to "get stuck behind a learner", and will try to get past where possible - no matter if it's a learner or Michael Schumacher driving.
