I'm just about to build a PC for day to day stuff, a bit of photoshop, some hdtv, maybe the odd game occasionally. Would I see any real benefit spending more on a 2MB intel over a 1MB? q6600 seems a bit overkill for my use.

Barely any difference TBH. Saw an e2200 overclocked and put up against an x6800 (1mb vs 4mb L2) in a review. Difference was barely noticeable. Infact only games saw a slight decrease in FPS with the e2200.

I'd consider one of the new dual core celerons: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-194-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=554

They're essentially cores in disguise anyway and for £36 you really can't complain. Great little chips.

If you must spend more then the e2000/e4000 series will suffice.

Thanks mate. The gigabyte DS3R looks good for the price so probably that. The one with 8 USB ports on the back.

I'll overclock probably about as far as the retail HSF lets me as I want to keep it reasonably quiet and cheap.

Does that sound like a good idea?

Perfect idea! :)

I can recommend the Gigabyte wholeheartedly.

I'd imagine you'd be looking at a steady 3ghz on stock cooling with any of those chips.

I assume the DS3R you're looking at is the P35 chipset - they clock really well and don't require any extra voltage on the chipset, etc. If you need any extra you'll only be looking at ram and cpu voltage.

My previous P35 DS3P clocked my old B3 q6600 to 3ghz @ 1.36v which was only a slight bump.

Have fun! :D

This review did not find them that 'great' :(

IMO I'd avoid Celeron (or AMD Sempron) if doing more than surfing & or office work :)
Yeah, surprising hit TBH. Perform better when clocked - seems to match a stock e4500 which is more than double the cost.

Personally on a budget i'd still consider it but as you point out it may be worth forking out the extra £8 for an e2160 if gaming is more of a priority.

I think that review is a little misleading though as some of those processors are a good deal more expensive.

Thanks mate. The e2160 is only £42 so I'll grab that for the slight price difference. Would be silly not to. The 9x multi should be plenty paired with some decent ddr800 I reckon.

It's been ages since I've done this :D My trusty NF7-S sadly passed away in the night lol. The poor old thing has been hammered for about 5 years. Shoving excessive voltage through components might shorten their life but 5 years is good going if you ask me.

Loved my old NF7 board. Still going in my fiancees farthers PC. Only about 4 years old and never overvolted so should be good for a little longer.

Good idea on the 2160. Used to have one myself. Clocked straight to 3.2ghz under a scythe ninja so 3ghz on the stock cooler should be fine.

Just so you know monkeyspank i've got an e2160 on it's way right now! Can't hack this Celeron D any longer and can't quite justify e8400 prices.

If you decide to overclock it then let me know how you get on! :)

Will do mate, I'm hoping it should all arrive tomorrow. Get the OS loaded and then it's straight into the BIOS for some free mhz :D

Stuff is so cheap now! I got the mobo, 2GB tight RAM, e2160 and a hd3850 delivered for under £260.

Mine came today, it's an M0 :D
Now to sit here watching the clock til it reaches 5.30

Are you sure it wasn’t a Ti500? if it wasn’t you got royally ripped off :p

Yeah I know :D Didn't care at the time. I had it on pre-order. Never again lol.

Straight in at 3Ghz 333x9, 1.4V on the stock cooler (and paste - always try the easiest option first ;) ). Nice and cool and quiet. That'll do for me :)

Now to find a DD encoding sound card. Sooo expensive for something that was built in to the NF7-S!
