L4D CPU usage

When in game it’s using 100% of my CPU and after asking a couple of people and looking around seems I’m not the only one, any one here having this problem as I can’t seem to find an answer to why it’s doing this.

You should be happy it uses 2 full cores...

Get a quad core cpu is you're that eager on keeping the cpu usage below 100% :p.

Umm, I can answer it for you... You're using a CPU intensive application, therefore, your CPU is being used. :p

Then if running at 100% is right this is the most CPU intensive game to date and after playing it I really don’t see how. It makes Tf2, Crisis and Farcry 2 look like little games that are easy to run.

It makes proper use of dual core, any other app that doesn't show 100% cpu usage just means it sucks at using more than 1 core and wastes cpu power...

As far as I'm aware L4D is the first source game to properly utilise two cores. The most usage you'd ever see in TF2 is 50% as it doesn't utilise dual cores without using crash causing commands.

I couldn't comment about Farcry 2 and Crysis.

It's calculating a lot of movements with regards to the amount of zombies coming at you. Can't see any reason why it would need full use of both cores but some games just run without a cpu limiter, for instance while the graphics card is busy rendering the cpu will be working on physics, AI etc..

Even though it's odd that it uses 100% the entire time. There's only so many calculations per frame that it needs to do.

It's possible that it could just be the way the game is coded, there were a few iterations of Championship Manager (and fm2005 prior to a patch) where it would ALWAYS use 100% cpu even when not actively processing anything. Older games in particular were subject to this, Quakeworld was another one.

Essentially it is possible for badly coded games to constantly use 100% of spare cpu time even when they don't actually need to make that many calculations. That doesn't mean they are cpu limited, it just means that the cpu is constantly cycling (probably polling something as fast as it can forever).

It could be that Valve have just made L4D use any spare cpu power to run more and more AI calculations. Although that would have the effect of making the game harder the faster the computer you have (assuming the AI is well coded, obviously!)

Not true.

UT3 uses 100% CPU usage and it's no where near as complex as a game like Crysis.

It is the way it does things and I am guessing a game like Crysis does allot of the stuff on the GPU rather than the CPU.

It's the way the Source engine works. In TF2 one of the cores will be at 100%, even on the menu screens. I'd imagine it's the same for L4D but for both cores, but I haven't checked.

Well nice to see there are some people here that are willing to disuse this topic, I should learn to just ignore the I must laugh at you and prove you wrong people that plague so many forums.

I have solved the issue and yes it is was an issue, it was kind of my fault for not checking video settings the first timed I played I just used the “recommended settings” which turn out to be not recommended for duel core uses. There is a new setting for Valve games in their called “Multicore Rendering” which is enabled by default and if it’s left on it will not only use 100% of both cores but stress your system heavily.

I do however feel if Valve have an option like this and has a recommended setting this should not be on if you’re not running a quad core. However with it now disabled the game and system run’s real nice and smooth and it’s using both cores and peaks at around 70% load.:)

So you've turned off multicore rendering and sight that as a good thing? What's the point in having a dual core CPU if you stop one the first game that comes that's able to utilise both cores fully, from doing so?

Yeah, it's a comical way to do things.

Lol he reminds me of the guy I once knew who thought if you CPU was at 100% it would melt.

Silly thing turning Multicore rendering off, stupid tbh, its on and both cores are being stressed for a reason, it was not an issue.....

If you don't want to use 2 cores, buy a single core CPU... 100% CPU usage does not mean stuff will slow down, in a game it's using most of the CPU so likely to improve performance.

I'd would not be surprised if your CPU is not stable at 3.5Ghz tbh as I guess you haven't ran any tests like Orthos as they stress the CPU to 100% but more than L4D would be at 100%..

Some of you never read or learn or investigate do you. Its running on both cores if you read you would know that. And some of you don’t know what multi means do you it’s not the same dual jezzzz.

And if you think that running a game at 100% stressing out a PC when even ventrilo struggles to work is a normal or good thing then well the nOOb is strong in you. My PC runs fine at 3.5 after 18 hours of Orthos so I guess you guessed wrong.;)

I know 5 people who last night changed the setting and now have a great running game and for the dual core people it’s running on both cores so....

Or perhaps my G15 keyboard is lying to me saying it’s running on both cores, whatever, pick out what you believe is wrong do zero investigation to back your claims and so on it’s all good for me.:D

Multi-Core is for more than one core..... A CPU with more than one core is a Multi-Core CPU, a Dual-Core CPU is a Multi-Core CPU... So I think I do know what it means but I'd question if you do.

Even an E6600 running at 100% it should still be a smooth experience to a certain degree on the desktop, I know it was for me. I suggest you check your PC and possible re install windows as if ventrilo struggles to work when playing L4D something is not right.

You are the one who needs to learn in this, everyone has told you their is nothing wrong with L4D using 100% of the CPU and that is the truth, UT3 even uses 100% and it effects no ones gaming experience.

I'm using dual core and running with multicore rendering on. Guess what? It's perfectly smooth at 1920x1200 with AA and AF both cranked up. Crazy, eh? Perhaps I should disable multicore rendering, or turn off one of my cores in bios, to make it run faster...

For your info, I did google your "issue" before posting and the only comments I could find even remotely suggesting anything like you suggested were just as clearly uninformed as yourself. Link a reliable source to prove us all wrong and I'm sure we'll backtrack and say how amazingly right/etc you are.

I'm sorry, but I'm struggling to take someone called epicname who starts a sentence LOL LOL LOL LOL etc seriously.
