La Liga is dying?

The 6th/7th place teams would win the SPL

The article isn't saying La Liga is turning into the SPL in terms of quality, it's pointing out the huge financial gulf between the top 2 and the rest. How well Spanish teams would do in the SPL, or vice versa, is irrelevant.

The fact that there are 6+ great, solid European teams in the league suggests it's nothing like the SPL

The fact that 2 teams at the top of the table are more powerful than the others makes it exactly like every other major league in Europe. (Man Utd/Chelsea, Barca/Real, Inter/Juve, Bayern)

Use the same points in our league (ignore Man City), could Villa/Spurs/Arsenal/Liverpool compete financially with Man Utd and Chelsea? No

But the fact that there is a high level of collective debt, the top two clubs have revenues many times that of their 'competitors' and that support for the big two far outweighs the rest indicate that it is very similar to the SPL.

Meh, not convinced really myself. Could say very similar things for nearly any league in the world.

Our league has ridiculous debts (you guys have heard of Portsmouth?), our top teams make a lot, lot more money than the lower teams and loads of people support Man Utd and Arsenal (with a few new Chelsea fans recently too)

No shock that the teams that win stuff get more money and have more fans.

A lot of teams in the prem have long term debt deals that they can service quite well (pompey aside) at a lower level clubs do stupid things like borrow money they know they cannot afford in a desperate attempt to get into the above div (administration being the cost of failiure)

Who are these teams?

PS: Atleast in Italy a lot of clubs have lovely training facilities

lol 6+ great European teams :D

Considering some people were saying Milan weren't a great European team a few weeks back I'd love to know who these 6+ teams are.

Real Madrid
Barca
Valencia?
Sevilla?
erm....
pfftt....

Mind you, what Spanish chap could list decent europe sides out of our top 4, spurs & notts forest. Hardly done anything in europe for 20-30 years now.

All leagues go up and down for one reason or another - it wasn't that long ago that the Italian league was the strongest in Europe. Look at them now. 15 years or so ago the German league was excellent, it went way down, and is now on the way up. Two or three years ago the EPL was strongest, you could now argue that the Spanish league is stronger, and it's only so long before that plummets as well.

The way things are going these days, we're not going to be considered a great European team for long. I still don't understand how we're third although if we don't get our act together soon we won't be finishing the season that high.

Apologies for going off-topic, I'm just able to blast my team easily.

Real Madrid, Valencia, Sevilla, Barca, Atletico, Villareal are all involved in European competitions until the latter stages every year or two :)

I remember Villareal being incredibly difficult last year and were the only team who comprehensively took Arsenal apart last season in every area of the pitch (at their ground). Obviously this season they've had to cope with the loss of Pellegrini who had made them a fantastic side, but they're starting to play good stuff again over the last weeks/months

Obviously Barca/Atletico/Valencia are still in Europe now too

p.s. I didn't mean European greats of years gone by, I meant Spain have a lot of teams who are good enough to give most teams in Europe a game CURRENTLY. I thought this article was about now

The only side that comprehensively took Arsenal apart?

Is that the only side at all last season, or just the sides from La Liga?
Because I can think of one two legged tie that Arsenal played in where over 180 minutes they were beaten comprehensively all over the pitch by a certain side, and it wasnt Villareal.

Man Utd are wicked at counter attacks but Villareal had something that I didn't see in any other team all year. I didn't feel Arsenal were fit to play the passing game against Villareal as they were just better at it. Not something I felt against Man Utd!
