There are different fees because of recent changes to government funding. In September 2008, the government removed funding for students who are studying for a qualification that is equivalent to or at a lower level than a qualification that they already have. This new policy applies across all universities in England (not just Birkbeck). In practice, it means that if you have an undergraduate qualification (like a BA/BSc, Certificate of Higher Education or equivalent-level course), you will be required to pay a higher fee.

so if you have a HEcert you'll pay more, so for mature students wishing to get on a degree course having done a HEcert will have to pay more. and prices are going up 4k a year for each year for a degree course.

Ive known about this for a while now, however I think you may have missed a few points. Yes funding has been cut for the reason that its at the cost of the tax payer for second degree qualifications or the like but this does not affect all universities. The policy just means that if a University wishes to apply a higher fee they are able to, as their funding is less. However, in some cases they are not applying this charge. As an example I begin my second degree at Leeds Met in september, who only charge £2000 for any degree. My fee's are still the samr as those. Dont sweat dude, have a look around, phone a few uni's up and find out the case.

Thinking of doing another post grad dip, but i did think hum another degree however its put me off.

So, what was your original Graduate degree in and what was your first Postgraduate diploma in?

as far as i can remember, less than 10 uni's in the UK charge less than maximum fees per term. That was a year ago now, there might (unlikely) be more now...

At least labour had the cuts to at least attempt to sort the university funding crisis. Fees are gonna have to rise at some point again or the universities will suffer their international standings further.
