does this need a separate power supply? or does it get the power over the USB? I was going to buy the WD Elements 500gb disk but this is tempting...

doh thats not good, don't want to have to find another plug!! The WD Elements doesn't need a plug, it gets the power from the USB, so looks like I'll have to pay an extra £10 oh well.
Well that sucks if it needs extra power. I'll wait till I get it before I make up my mind but I got it to use on a laptop so needing extra power is going to screw me over a bit.
That and the fact the OcUK never mention this fact on the page
They also don't mention that you'll need a PSU when buying a motherboard - or that the monitors they stock need to be plugged in. All 3.5" drives need an external power source - this has always and will always be the case when any of the current breed of interfaces (USB, firewire, ESATA) are being used. That and the fact the OcUK never mention this fact on the page
We have just checked one of the units to see what drive it has inside and can confirm it is definitely a Samsung HD501LJ.
As you can see from our website this is actually cheaper than the Samsung drive itself so is simply a case of ripping the drive apart and getting the internal drive out.
I havent opend the drive up though, so I cant see why the drive warranty would be void, but I assume they would wriggle out of it.
And to think, a few months ago I paid £55 for an 80 gig usb external, damn you technology!
A few months ago!?
I have followed the advice above, my drive has now got a smart error. Is my warranty void?
The drive has a warranty void sticker on the unit, if you remove it well.....guess what happens.
