I'm looking to get a new external HDD, 1tb maybe?
The LaCie ones in the OCUK shop are relatively cheap and no one's reviewed them, is there something I should know about that company that accounts for the low price and lack of reviews?

i have the LaCie Desktop HD 1TB drive, was cheap and fairly aesthetically pleasing.

However, the inbuilt fan cycles every 5-10 seconds for about 10 seconds and if the disk sits on your desk (like mine does) it begins to get very annoying! (a bit like a busy day at Heathrow! I'm going to look at disconnecting it / removing it at some point). The chassis is well built, but because of this I wouldn't suggest the drive being all that portable (if that was important to you?) as it is quite heavy incorporating the 2 x 500gb drives (I think they are Seagate).

For the money, I'm very pleased. I've not had any issues with it yet apart from the fan noise.

i used to have a bigdisk 500gb (2 x 250gb drives) it was a good drive but the power connector didn't connect into the socket very well, you had to push it in quite hard for it to stay in and power up the drives. not suprising then that after a year (literally 2-3 days after the warrenty ran out) the disk stopped powering up, i took it apart as the warrenty didn't matter anymore and found out that the power PCB was the problem, when i asked lacie if i could buy a replacement pcb they told me to buy a new drive enclosure, so thats what i did and will never buy a lacie HDD again

Lacie are very well regarded in the creative industry, their direct attached storage drives also tend to be pretty reliably quick (their NAS devices I'm less impressed with). They've been making external drives for a long time now (longer than most of the drive manufacturers have actually been trying sell external drives in some cases).

So the answer to your question is, there's no need to worry about quality because of the low prices, they're a big, established brand.
