It might be a class thing. No one around here does that. But I've seen it in trendy bars in upper class areas doing it.

Years ago when I was a young man hardly anyone used to handshake.

Been doing this for nearly 30 years, seemed to be mainly "Heavy Metal" types like myself doing it back then but it's very common now.

Usually shake hands with friends, light hugs for male relatives, but a warm hug, and a kiss on both cheeks for my sons.
The younger one suffers it, with exaggerated eye rolling, the elder one tries to fend me off, but I get through.
Elder one says, “I’ll suffer it in U.K. dad, but I’ve lived in Germany for 30 years, try it over there and I’ll kill you.”
Every female friend and relative gets a kiss on both cheeks, my wife says, “He’s harmless, his great-grandmother was French, that’s how he gets away with it.”

hugging mates?! were they emigrating, going on a long trip, dying? if no, then there's too much gayness in this thread. a quick nod of the head with a 'later dude' suffices among real men. :p
