Hi folks,

Need a whole bunch of wine to survive my few weeks off of work being festive.

There is an Amex offer for 35 off of 100 at Laithwaites and something less good for NakedWines.

Does anyone use these services? Can anyone recommend how best to spend a hundred quid at Laithwaites? They do a kit for 65 which includes some freebies so presumably that is super cheap plonk (or they are making a mega loss and hoping you stick around!).

Thanks

They do sell some good wines at proper prices but not in those bundles in my opinion. I've ordered all my Christmas wines from the wine society, but they won't offer you £3 bottles of plonk bundled with some stemless glasses if that's your thing.

I’m a Naked wines customer. Pay £20 a month onto my account and buy a case when have space. One time I got three bottles for free.

Last year I was invited by email to buy a case of bin ends (wines they have a few bottles of) for £65 for 12 and it was a mystery case. My parents are Naked wines customers and were jealous that they didn’t get an invite!

Laithwaites here, they’ve got some really nice wines and I’ve found the next day delivery ahem, very useful. You may end up kissing a lot of pigs though. Prices are ok but not spectacular. You definitely want to buy by the case to get the discounts. I’d normally pay 130-150 for a case with my favourites in.

Any tips on how to get started? I literally have no idea (I am the guy who buys the £10 wine because it is slightly more than the £7 wine and a lot less than the £20 wine).

Do you mind sharing what your favourites are? Running on fumes here.

I'd just be careful of those offers from laithwaites, naked etc. They arent selling you £200 worth of wine for £80 or whatever they claim, the stated prices pre discount are grossly inflated compared to elsewhere. The marketing is certainly slick.

Actually I have not had the reds for a while, but for the xmas whites I can recommend:

Camaleo (not sure if they still have it)
Queen Bee Viognier
Brogli Gavi
Michel Thomas Sancerre (say it in a french accent otherwise it’s Mike Thomas :D )

Whilst it’s not that bad the issues are:

1) it’s an inertia model, so they want you to subscribe and forget about cancelling
2) many of the wines are exclusives (not in a fancy way, you just struggle to find a comparison) so who knows if you are overpaying. However for a Chablis, Fluerie etc it’s probably 20% cheaper than the supermarket (where you have less choice) plus you are buying 6 or 12 to get the best price. That’s not ahem, a problem for us!

Some winemakers only make for Laithwaites or NW and some are only for a year.

Though have been buying the wine at Sainsburys when it’s 6 or more get 25% off. Can mix n match which some customers say you can’t do that! Sainsburys take off 25% off your total.

Get the Taste The Difference and more premium lines. Get wines on offer too.

The wine offer finishes on Dec 19th. Not available in Scotland!

Is there a local offy that caters to the discerning drinker with craft beer and wine? There's one by me and they have a much more interesting selection of wines and will spend time talking with you about your requirements. Plenty of very nice wine starting in the 10 region. I've never spent more than 25 odd for a super fancy (Uruguayan Tannat) bottle.

Thanks chaps. I think this is experimental "plonk" for the festive period, so not exactly down for a discerning palette/occasion. I'll grab the Laithwaites best value "luxury" deal and see how I fare considering some of the recommendations in here.

This is purely a stock cupboard exercise; I'll revert back for proper drinks from some of the more reputable places it sounds like.

Thank you

Possibly too late but independent merchants do mixed cases eg

We are in the Tanners wine club, so get a mixed case every two months. Red/white through the winter, white/rose in the summer. Not had anything we didn't like yet.

If you fancy supporting an independent family business, I can highly recommend Pierre Hourlier Wines.

They're based in my village and I pop in there all the time, never had a bad bottle, usually just go with his recommendations. I particularly enjoy the whites from the Joseph Cattin vineyard....the Gewurztraminer is wonderfully balanced.

*My recommendation may or may not be influenced by frequent impromptu tasting sessions when I pop in on my lunch break :D

The Wine Society is very good.

What I like about it is once you sign up, you are a member for life, and don't pay any monthly subscription, you buy the wine when you want it, and the selection of wine is first class and reasonably priced, think it starts at £6 something a bottle upwards.
