Hey All,

I'm looking to go for a drive out to the Lake District with a few friends, likely 3-4 cars. We're looking for somewhere to camp for two nights (Arrive Friday Afternoon, leave Sunday). It'd be sometime in the middle/back end of August.

Only issue I'm having is I can't seem to find any campsites that allow groups, would be 4-5 people tops.

Anyone have any suggestions? A lot seem to only allow 1 car too.

Everything you have asked for, we have been going for a good few years now, in a group of up to 8/9 with upto 3 cars.

Big site with facilities and cheap, right in the middle of the lakes pretty much, It’s a stunning area.
We have had raised camp fires (basically once the bbq is done we take the grill off and put some wood in)

Give it a try and enjoy :)

What do you want from it? National Trust's Low Wray site is absolutely stunning, especially if you get a lakeside pitch. I've been as a couple and with another couple (4 people) and as long as you're happy sitting round the campfire chatting, drinking and playing cards then it'll be fine.

This was our pitch and view last time:

Might be worth checking with them - quite a few have clamped down after the behaviour of the minority who turn up and think its OK to play loud music all night long, get drunk and hassle other campers and leave a ton of litter, etc. but most (well some anyhow) are accommodating if you discuss it in advance and show you understand their concerns, etc.

(Though the odd place will get funny about rules are rules, etc.)

I've not stayed here per se, but have stayed in one of the cottages that overlooks it. Always seems to have a healthy amount of people during the summer, but as you say, it's a great spot in the Lakes. Got a load of pubs nearby, some decent/some excellent, a few restaurants if needs be, but a load of brilliants walks from the site; each side of the valley is brilliant, with Lingmoor and Pike O'Blisco on one, and Loft Crag, Harrison Stickle, Stickle Tarn and Pike O'Stickle on the other - with Crinkle Crags and Bowfell at the far end of the valley. Also, the long walk up to Scafell Pike from Langdale is brilliant.

Great place to camp, won't need your car for the weekend at all.

The NT campsite at Hoathwaite on Coniston is great. Also great, but more remote, is Turner Hall farm in the beautiful Duddon Valley. Sykeside campsite in the Kirkstone Pass is fantastic.

Thanks for the replies guys :)

Bays Brown Campsite is looking to be the one so far, Low Wray seems fully booked.

We're just looking for somewhere to chill and have a couple of drinks - no loud music or shouting etc.

We went to a place right on Ullswater, can't remember the name now.

We had 3 cars, 3 families and pitched 3 tents and had a little communal cooking/sitting area marked out with wind breaks, played a little bit of music, no problems at all.

For the cost I've been unable to beat it in the lakes, there are nicer sites out there but most charge silly fees for a camping pitch with no power (national trust sites are a joke fees wise imo) There's a lovely pub and local shop (Which sells everything you could need, the Mrs loves the Duck eggs) in the village about a 10min walk along a foot path, Little stream for a dip on site if it's real hot. We would be going ourselves this year but have a 2 week old baby stopping us lol.

Sounds perfect for us :) Not bothered about electric or anything, just want a basic spot that's gonna be safe to camp in with a few cars.

Congrats on the baby :)

I always liked the Great Langdale national trust site

great walks on the doorstep, a good shower block and the Old Dungeon Ghyll pub just a few minutes walk away

The NT campsite at Wasdale was pretty good last time I stayed there (october a few years back). Stumbling distance from the Wasdale head inn aswell. Might be a little too out of the way for some though

Just wild camp, as long as you're sensible about where you pitch your stuff (out of sight) and what you do there (no fires, loud music etc) no one will bother you.

Wild Camping is out of the picture unfortunately, I wouldn't feel confident leaving tents/cars somewhere random throughout the day whilst we're out and about.

This is where my group of friends always camp, never had any issues with around 10 of us. Fantastic site with everything you need in close proximity.
