LAN access for one computer

Is there anyway to setup a router so that only one computer can use the internet, my friend is having a real problem with his room mates letting their friends use his internet access so he want's to set the router up so that it will only allow him internet access.
Wireless is already off and he has no way of knowing the users MAC address.

He might be able to setup mac filtering in his router. He might have to buy a better router if his one doesn't support it. He should just lay down the law if he is paying for the connection and tell them to eff off

You could mess with it so that only his PC is configured properly and they'll have to guess at a few things to get any form of access.

1. Alter the router IP so it's something rather odd and not the bog standard 192.168.1.1 etc. They'll have to find this so they can set the gateway properly on their devices (especially if you do the next step). Keep it in the 192.168 range but it should slow down people who haven't come prepared.
2. Setup DHCP so it dishes out rubbish to anyone who's configured automatically. such as giving out invalid IP range, garbage subnet and DNS server which doesn't exist.
3. Configure his PC with the correct settings for the router and use opendns for resolution (so it's not reliant on the router for resolution). Never tried it but you could easily enough even setup the routers DNS incorrectly too.

Come on folks be devious there's bound to be many other ways of messing with people whilst keeping his PC working perfectly!

Just disabling the router's DHCP server will prevent most casual computer users from getting a working connection.

A decent router with proper MAC filtering features would stop most of the rest.

If they’re savvy enough to start cloning MAC addresses then they're going to be very difficult to stop.

1 - that wont work as the router will dish out the correct default gateway via DHCP.
2 - that is unlikely to work as most routers wont let you setup DHCP incorrectly.
3 - depending on how savvy the user is, they could specify their own DNS servers.

Easiest way is to change the LAN subnet of the router to something random - 192.168.23.0/24 and disable DHCP. They'd have to guess the correct subnet and default gateway to get on.......unless they have wireshark or similar on their laptop and sit it in promiscuous mode until the router advertises or broadcasts for something.

MAC white listing is probably the easiest way. So only allow the MAC of his computer.
Disabling DHCP and using a random subnet is another easy way and will stop most people.

If wireless is off can he move the router to somewhere physically secure?

Yep setup Mac filtering so only pre-specified MAC addresses are allowed to gain network access.

Turn off DHCP as a second step

Bam! That will cut off most normal users ;)

Assuming what you have got is a Billion BIPAC-7500G, MAC filtering is available to you and will as suggested above, keep most people out.

Alternatively, (again as suggested above) you could use an off-the-wall Router IP address, switch off DHCP and use a static IP address for your PC.

Finally, simply switch off the router when you aren't using it - that is pretty much guaranteed to make it inaccessible ;)

Obscure router, who supplied it

I gave it him actually :D, i had it lying around and he needed one with wireless.
Can someone give me a rough guild on how to go about doing all this, i have setup MAC filtering for his comp but do i only need to disable DHCP and that is it?

Provider is BT

If dhcp is disabled he won't be given an ip, he could statically assign one but none technical people won't know what that is.

Mac filtering works well.

How do you set MAC filtering up for one comp, i know his comp is on the mac filter list but other people can still use it so how do you block them without knowing there MAC address?

Have a look at the comprehensive manual HERE, page 67 of 112. Make sure that you "Enable" the MAC Address Filter and "Allow" ONLY the PC that you want to have access to the Internet. You probably want to reboot the Modem/Router after saving your changes.

Incidentally, when disabling DHCP, make sure that you remember the IP address you set up for the Modem/Router, you don't want to lock yourself out of it - you can always connect up with an Ethernet cable but you still need to know the Modem/Router's IP address and the admin password!

I have setup MAC to drop all connections and added his comp with the rules set to forward his only, his internet is working so its a case of waiting to see if there are any sour faces next time the saps come round. :D
