Hiya, trying to set up a network between 2 pc's. Was working fine a few days ago but now does not seem to want to connect.

It says aquiring network address but then comes up with 'No or Limited Connection'

Any help please? I have tried updating drivers and tried the cable on another pc and still doesn't work!

Thanks,
Mark

if you are not internet sharing good old netbeui could be your friend, especially seeing as you seem a novice when it comes to this type of thing

I am internet sharing, and I do know what I am doing, the only reason I posted here is because the network has suddenly stopped working (Not in my house) it was working perfectly before, i'm just wondering if theres any reason as to why it could suddenly stop working? Cable is being taken back to the shop tomorrow to be tested. Don't see what else could be the problem, as i have tried most things that I can think of!

have you tried manually giving the pc an ip address and see what happens?

Yep have done this, i get as far as both pc connecting the network but won't share files or the other pc wont connect to the internet :(

Hello mate,

Have you checked for viruses or spyware on the host/client machines?

Some spyware messes up TCP/IP in windows - this could be the cause - new.net springs to mind :/ Fortunately there is a utility that will reset TCP/IP settings back to defaults - http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

Have you installed any firewall software on the host/client machine? If so uninstall on both machines and just use the windows one.

Have you tried removing ICS, rebooting windows then re-enabling it?

Let us know how you get on.

Will check this again, but i did run a spyware scan on both machines and nothing was found.

Very sorry mate didn't want to offend you, just netbeui is soo simply for file sharing gets rid of all hassles.

If you setup address manually and try to ping the other host does anything appear in your arp cache?

Might be worth using some network monitoreing tools to see what is going out, think i used packetiser when i had something similar.

If your running a cable between PCs and sharing internet I guess your using windows internet connection sharing.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling this on the server and then with the disk it makes on the client?

No probs. I can't ping anything which makes me more confused! when i specify a IP it shows the 2 little computers as 'connected' but no file sharing or internet at all.. If i dont assign a IP and set it to do it automatically then i get ' limited or no connectivity' :(

Ok, on the main pc, the ip should be 192.168.0.1, on the second pc, manually set the ip to 192.168.0.2, and then DNS, WINS and default gateway to 192.168.0.1.

Thanks, have tried this before though,

What should the default gateway, DNS, WINS be on the host pc?
