Lapped cpu ?????

I'm pretty sure there's other routes I'd go down before lapping a CPU. A cheapo aftermarket CPU cooler would probably have more effect with no risk.
It seems debatable how effective lapping is anyways (depends how bent your CPU is in the first place) but <5 degrees seems the concensus.
If you want to see it being done, just youtube it.

I personally think it's the finishing touch to a well overclocked machine that has had money thrown at it.

Lapped CPU's are mostly just for Intel chips. It seems their production process leaves the top curved slightly. For some reason, AMD chips don't seem to suffer from this (as far as i know...)

You generally get a couple of degrees cooler running if you lap both your cpu and heatsink base. I'm not sure if its worth it though, a couple of degrees for no more warranty?

Generally you're only going to want to lap if you've overclocked. That tends to invalidate the warranty anyway >_>

Lapped cpu's and coolers are for enthusiasts who want to eek the most performance out of their cpu. Lapping both cpu and cooler can lead to a drop in temps allowing you to clock further.
