Just a cuiriosity thing, not doing it, or thinking of doing it myself, but.

I see posts about people lapping their CPUs and their CPU coolers, and getting great reductions in temperature.

Do people do this to their GPUs and GPU cooler? If they don't, then why not? Would it not be useful for the same reasons that it is for the CPU? (lower temps and therefore more scope to overlock.)

Thanks.

You would be able to do the Cooler, but not the chip.
The only thing that gets lapped on a CPU is the IHS, the chip is under that. Its bare on a GFX card. So you would be damaging silicon. Plus, you cant remove the chip and the caps and other components would get in the way.

8800gtx has an ihs but its a pretty pointless idea and impossible in practice. GFX cards are much more heat resistant than cpus anyway and a decent waterblock/upgraded hsf arrangement will be more than enough for most.
