Lapping question

I don't see why you have this attitude. I think w3bbo has done an excellent job. Some people like to be perfectionists, and there's no problem with that. If I was to lap my CPU, I'd want to go for an effect like that, just so I can be proud that it was done properly.

It's not an attitude

Granted, some people want to be perfectionists, but imo going as far as actually polishing a lapped cpu for 'very minimal' gain in just ott. But if peeps want to waste their time doing it, it's no skin off my nose.

It's not as if anyone can see it once its in can they.

Doesn't it being shiny reflect the heat? :p ;)

I shall be lapping my Thermalright U210 this weekend, whether I lap the CPU is another thing, am toying with going quad core so I guess I may as well give it a shot, have lapped older Intels before, and I think I lapped a socket A thunderbird once :D back in the day when a dodgy shim could short out and kill your CPU/board :D

I've got a belt sander in my garage, might use it on my heatsink :p

I used 1200 grit form start to finish and took several attempts and what must've been hours. Result wasn't mirror, jsut a polished look and i didn't go right down to the copper, just at the edges.

Did temps improve? Well summer's approaching and my room seems to be getting hotter and hotter, but it did help a tiny bit. i get 33-37C idle @ 3.3-3.4ghz.

You said yourself it's 1c max, probably even less but any gain is worth it imo. Folk will sell a block and buy a different one coz its 'better' - even if, again, the difference is 1c. Its not only the temp difference why I do it tho. I wouldn't say I am a perfectionist I just fail to see the point in only doing half a job and also having a shiny cpu helps resale price rather than something that look like its been thrown through a meat grinder.;)

i cant believe you get it like that using your hands and paper. should sell that for more than the retail price!

I lapped my Q6600 with 800 grit.
Made about 2c difference to each core temp.
I was waiting for a replacement graphics card so I did it purely because the pc was just sitting there and I had a bit of time.

Some lint free cloths

Wet & Dry 800

Mirror (The flat surface)

Tape sandpaper to mirror, hold cpu in hand, use back and forth motion, rotate 90 degrees every minute or so, clean dust & particles with cloth & isopropyl.

But... I can't say I have noticed a big enough difference to justify it.

Funnily enough, that one did go for more than retail but because of the clockspeed attained not because of the shine (or maybe both).
