Hi Guys,

Im going to be lapping my E4300 & tuniq tomorrow, ive had a read of the guide in the advanced overclocking thread and seen a few vids on youtube.

Does anyone have any advice for me or sharing there experience? This will be my first time at lapping and taking some wet and dry to my cpu will take quite some will power! :D

What are peoples oppinions between using sand paper compaired to wet and dry?

Thanks and wish me luck!!
Jas

I use wet, I think you get better results, plus the sand paper stick to the surface you are using better...

You really don't want to be using sandpaper to lap your cpu. Afaik you cannot get a fine enough grain. You need a minimum 800 grade wet and dry to do a half decent job, higher grades if you require a better finish.

I normally associate sand paper with sanding wood, you can get wet and dry at any local car parts shop by the way so not exactly that hard to find.

Well im all lapped up, temps are loads better :) knocked 10c off load temps was 67c now 57c so im really pleased.

Strangely enough the hardest thing was getting hold of the wet and dry in that high of a grade, ended up being halfords!!!

Yeah im really pleased tbh, i went from 400 up to 1500 on the wet and dry. Then added some metal polish. Not as crazy shiney as some peoples here and im sure people have got better temp decreases than me but im happy with that.

Idle temps have also gone down from 42c to 34c so im also really impressed with that as normally you dont see much of a decrease in idle temps. (Well i say normally, thats from me looking at other lapping posts)

Took about 3 to 4 hours in total. Very achey arms now but really worth it!

Thanks for the kind comments guys!

@jas07, any chance of posting detailed instructions on how to do it for both the CPU and Tuniq. I also like you didn't get any difference in temps using the Tuniq compared to AC 7 Pro so mine needs lapping too.

I'm guessing it'll void the CPU warranty too and you've scratched the top surface.

Thanks. My mobo gone for RMA and CPU and Tuniq sitting there for now.

Also had a look at my Tuniq and there are two scratch marks in a line where the CPU was so i'm guessing it's not sitting flat on the cpu.

What a coincidence, I bought some 800 and 1500 from Halfords at the weekend!
I've just had a practise on an old celeron , it looks flat but quite scratchy even after the 1500.

1500 will still look a little 'scratchy' but it should be flat and going any further won't make any dramatic difference to temps - anything above 800 apparently won't. Aslong as its flat thats all that is required unless you want the absolute best finish. For that you will need to progress to 2000 and then 2500 and even then it might not be mirror shiny but dull shiny depending on what type of wet and dry you are using. If its dull then you can go one step further and use a metal polish but make damn sure you clean it off thoroughly afterwards.

If you going to do it, may as well do it properly and get the mirror finish! Even though it won't make a difference... may do on resale value! ;-)

@w3bbo, you could make some money.... i'd send you my cpu and cooler and pay you to do it ;-)

Mine had a dull reflection to it, was very concave, but then a lot of good heatsinks are designed slightly convex to combat this like the Thermalrite 120, so be warned.

Made a very minor difference, talking like 1-2C TOPS, but looks cool.

Didn't know that, have heard that some waterblocks are made convex on purpose as they'll straighten when bolted but not heard the same thing said about air coolers.

I lapped both my Q6600 and TRU120 (non extreme), the TRU120 had a very dodgy base which was out from both elevations.
