I shall be lapping my E2180 soon to lower my cpu temps. Which paper should i use? Regular Sand paper or Wet & Dry stuff?

Ive spy'd this in a kit from ............. for £1.99 which includes 1x240, 1x600, 1x800, 1x1200 WET AND DRY. Is this good enough to do the job, or is a finer paper needed?

Anyone got any good advice on lapping?

You want wet and dry. Its designed for metal, whereas sandpaper is just general purpose stuff. You want to add a touch of water to the paper to dampen it while you are doing it. Upto 1200 should be sufficient.

It's best to use wet and dry rather then ordinary sandpaper, you can pick of sheets of wet and dry from any car parts place, should be around 50p a sheet, haven't lapped anything in ages but the starting grade does depend on how concave/convex the HSF/CPU is to start off with ie how much material you need to get rid off before the fine sanding begins. 1200 grade should be enough to get a good finish and remember to add a drop or 2 of water to act as lubricant when using the 1200 grit paper.

As above (wet and dry, 400, 800, 1200), then you can get finishes like this:-

Right, i went to ******** before college and i now come back with the goods!. Should i lap now and put my ACF7 back on or wait untill i buy a new cooler? (hopefully soon)

okok, ill do it soon. Whats the best way then to apply AS5? The "line" Method? or Spead all over!!!

Seeing as your making so much effort, why not lap the cooler as well?
You could then try the line method for starters, install cooler and remove the cooler to check the contact is good.

Then clean it all of and put it back on again.

can someone provide a guide to lapping a cpu? how much drop in temps does it give on average? also if allowed, can anyone provide a link as to where to buy the sand paper from?

thanks

I'm sure i've read some where its about 8-10oc on Average. But they can vary, as you may not have had your HSF on correctly and now you do so you get lower temps. I went to Half***s aka the car place, it cost me £1.99 for 4 sheets. 1x240, 1x600, 1x800, 1x1200
