lapping.

Hey EdGey, you managed to do this yet? Im still wondering if its worth doing mine. Temps seem ok, but there is a variation of 2-4 degrees at idle and under load so thinking i should probably just get on and do it.

Thats normal - even after lapping my old Q6600 i had 2-3 Degrees.
 
well i started lapping my old AMD chip and i didnt see much happening? by the end of following tjharlows step by step thing i only had copper on the edges.

this means it was very very raised at the edges? keep going with 600 grit until i see more copper?

not sure. didnt really want to rush into anything so i just put it back in the computer and saw a 4C drop straight away which isnt bad considering it isnt finished.

grits i used were 400,600,800,1000,1200,1500,2000,2500.

ideas?

oh and prepare for a seriously aching arm:rolleyes:
 
I started out at 400G for about 4-5 mins of steady "scrubbing", then cleaned with compressed air to get rid of and erroneous grit particles, then did the same for each grade of paper up to 2000G.

The wierd thing is that my arm didnt ache at all, i simply sat at a table where the height was slightly higher than my elbow when i am sitting, put the music on and went for it.

I think if your arm is really aching then you are possibly applying too much pressure, when i have done mine i havent put much pressure on at all.
 
Think I may do mine in the next month or two. Just getting my head around the overclocking thing, so temps arent so much of an issue at the moment, would be nice to reduce them before i start though for obvious reasons.

yeah, definately don't start with 600- i made that mistake on monday, and it took me 5 hours to get the thing flat.:eek:

id get rong if i told you as they also sell alooot of computer stuff. :(

try what thepedster said, or you could try googling lapping kit and see if you can find some elswhere.
 
ok ive just spent the best part of 3 hours rubbing bits of metal of sand paper and i gota say im happy with the way its turned out. its all copper now and very shiny :). 1 think i will say is that when i went from 2000 to 2500 it went all rough and the shine went away? hmm... so i just did another sheet of 2000 and left it at that.

i also went up to 600G on the stock cooler and got it flat, but didnt go any further as i ran out of sand paper :/

anyway lets get to the temps. a further 5C drop which has amazed me. im very happy with the way this has turned out and am certianly going to lap the q6600 now.

its now running at 17C idle with the stock cooler, not sure about load just yet. its an athlon 64 2.2GHz btw.
 
The kit you had, did it have lots of different colours for the higher grit papers? Im going to be doing this on mine soon, just hope i dont run out of paper! Look forward to those kinds of drops :)
 
Guys, a little tip...

You don't even have to go to 2000 grit or 2500 grit to get a mirror finish.

I lapped my E8600 a couple of weeks back... 800, 1000, 1200, 1500 and polished her up with Autosol. You have to make sure you use plenty of IPA or similar to make sure the surface is clean afterwards.

Also take your time and don't rush; took me nearly three hours to do, however, the result is great and my temps dropped 12C. I would also recommend masking the edges of the chip and using the plastic back protector if you still have it.

Nice work Mremulator.

Gotta agree with you, there is no need to go to such a fine grit, when you can achieve such good results with the readily available grades.
 
Good job there! Think i may stock up on the lower grit papers (sub 2000) as last thing i want to do is run out half way through. Hoping the tuniq doesnt need much doing, anyone lapped one?
