I am looking at various laptops but I am so out of date with CPUs.
It will be a multi role machine but I would like some mid range gaming which will probably be the most cpu intensive function.

Would be looking at an i5. I am ok with intel's desktop range of CPUs so if you can give me a kind of comparison I will have some idea of what I can buy.

ultra books are under-powered and over priced... only good if you are lugging it around with you everywhere...

if you are looking for a decent gaming laptop to lug around with you and also use it as multi purpose laptop as well... then something like this would be good

got a nice i7 pu, 8gb mem, gtx860m graphics and a 1tb hdd for plenty of space... ok no ssd, but for on the go gaming, cannot complain... nothing else cheaper in fairness
 
That is very nice for the price.
If it has a 2nd drive bay I could put an SSD in there but not essential
